ROAD WOES CONTINUE for CLARKSON in 4-2 LOSS at PRINCETON

February 4, 2006

The road woes continued for the Clarkson University hockey team as the Golden Knights lost 4-2 at Princeton University on Saturday night at Hobey Baker Rink in New Jersey. Clarkson has lost nine straight on the road, and has just win away from Cheel Arena in ECAC Hockey League play. On Friday in Northford, CT, the Green and Gold lost 6-1 to Quinnipiac.

At 13-13-2 overall and tied for ninth in the ECACHL with a 6-9-1 league mark, the Knights will look to get back on the winning track when they open a four-game home stand at Cheel Arena hosting Central NY rivals Cornell and Colgate this coming weekend.

The Tigers scored twice in a 63-second span to take the lead in the first period, despite being out shot 13-4 in the opening 20 minutes. Grant Goeckner-Zoeller capitalized on a four-on-four situation at 11:34, followed by a power-play goal by Brett Wilson at 12:37.

Princeton extended its lead to 3-0 midway through the second with a goal by Kevin Westgarth at 7:31, just four seconds after the Knights had killed off the Tigers’ fourth power-play of the game.

Clarkson got on the scoreboard at 6:55 of the third with a power-play goal by Steve Zalewski (New Hartford, NY), who connected for his 6th goal of the season off assists from classmate David Cayer (Longueuil, QUE) and junior Michael Grenzy (Lockport, NY) just 10 seconds into the man-advantage opportunity.

The Tigers, came back, however with their fourth goal at 11:01 to regain the three-goal advantage.

With 2:53 remaining and the junior goaltender Kyle McNulty (Wakefield, RI) out of the net for the extra skater, Clarkson pulled back within two on sophomore Nick Dodge’s (Oakville, ONT) team-high 14th goal of the year with freshman Chris D’Alvise (Mississauga, ONT) and senior Jeff Genovy (Kalamazoo, MI) assisting. Clarkson put tremendous pressure on as the final seconds ticked off, but was not able to get any closer.

The Knights out shot Princeton 39-25. McNulty finished with 21 saves.
