Oswego, NY - Sophomore Carey Turner (Clifton Park, NY) responded to a last second lay up by the opposition with a pair of free throws in the waning seconds to lift the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team to a 63-62 victory over Oswego State Tuesday night.
The Golden Knights improved to 2-3 on the season with their second straight victory over a SUNYAC opponent. Oswego fell to 1-4 overall. Clarkson closes the first semester with a home game against SUNY Canton on Friday night.
Clarkson led 16-15 through the first 10 minutes of the opening period, but a furious end by the Lakers gave Oswego a 12-point edge, 37-25, at halftime. The Knights wasted little time chipping away at the deficit, climbing back to within five points with 12 minutes remaining. That last stretch was a difficult one for Clarkson, however, as although the team was within striking distance, the Knights couldn't seem to regain the lead it had in the first half. Finally, with just over two minutes to go, a lay up from Michelle Reddinger (Baldwinsville, NY) gave Clarkson its first lead of the second half. Oswego responded in kind and reacquired the advantage on its next possession with a 3-pointer.
The game teetered back and forth for the final minutes with Oswego taking the lead on a lay up with five seconds to go. After a missed lay up by Reddinger, the Lakers committed a foul on the loose ball, sending Turner to the line. The sophomore neatly buried both 15-footers to give Clarkson a one-point lead which it would not relinquish.
Turner finishes with 12 points, going 4-for-9 from the floor and 4-for-6 from the free throw line. Clarkson made just two shots from the perimeter in the second half, pounding the ball inside for lay ups and numerous free throw chances (14-for-21 from the line in the second half). Lauren Pluchino (Liverpool, NY) led all scorers with 20 points, adding in 4 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 blocks, and 2 steals. Reddinger finished with 12 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 blocks. Sophomore Courtney Green (Rochester, NY) kicked in nine points and Sierra Noles (Averill Park, NY) contributed 10 rebounds.
For Oswego, Kayla Ryan had 18 points and 9 rebounds.
