Potsdam, NY – Senior forward Michelle Reddinger (Baldwinsville, NY) scored a school-record 39 points, but the effort was not enough as St. Lawrence defeated the Clarkson University Women’s Basketball team 73-62 in Liberty League action Tuesday evening at Alumni Gymnasium.
The Golden Knights dropped to 3-10 overall and 0-3 in the Liberty League, while St. Lawrence claimed its first conference win of the season and improved to 9-4 and 1-2. Clarkson travels to face Skidmore and Union this weekend.
The Saints started off the game with a 3-point play and burst out to an eight-point lead in the first two minutes as the Knights struggled to hold possession on the perimeter. The run continued over the next four minutes as St. Lawrence was up 19-5 at the 14:31 mark. However, Clarkson used a 7-0 run over the following three minutes to climb back into the contest. The game would remain close for the next few moments, but a 3-pointer from Casey Capello at the 7:42 mark gave the Saints a double-digit lead again, something that St. Lawrence would not relinquish for the remainder of the half.
St. Lawrence pushed its lead to as many as 18 points (40-22) near the end of the first period before the two teams settled at a 15-point differential at the break. Abby Stanton shot 7-for-9 from the floor for 15 points while Casey Capello contributed 14 points on 2-for-5 shooting. Both teams shot well from the field, but it was St. Lawrence’s ability to cause turnovers (19) that allowed them additional offensive opportunities. Senior Michelle Reddinger led the Knights with 14 points, but no other player had more than four in the half for Clarkson.
Though Clarkson made numerous runs in the second half, the team was never able to get back to within single figures, cutting the lead to as few as 10 (63-53). Down the stretch, the Knights were able to stay in the game by pounding the ball inside to Reddinger. The senior forward dominated in the post, breaking the school record for points in a game (39) and field goals made (16). The former record for points in a game was 34, set by both Jen Martin and Linda Bondellio back during the 2002-03 season.
Leading the way for St. Lawrence was Casey Capello with 26 points, while Abby Stanton chipped in 22 points.
