Clarkson Completes Weekend Sweep over Arizona State in Men's Hockey Action at Cheel

Junior A.J. Fossen scored a pair of goals to spark the Clarkson University Hockey team to a 4-1 victory over Arizona State in non-league play before 1,831 fans at Cheel Arena on Saturday night.

The Golden Knights, who defeated the Sun Devils 3-2 on Friday, improve their record to 7-4-2 overall and will take their two-game winning streak into ECAC Hockey play next weekend when they make the road trip to Central NY to face Colgate and Cornell.

Clarkson's leading scorer, Fossen paced the Knights' offensively with his fifth career two-goal outing. Sophomore Perry D'Arrisso and junior defenseman Bryan Sinz also scored as Clarkson enjoyed its most productive outing since a 6-2 victory over Western Michigan on October 24.

The Green and Gold outshot the Sun Devils 29-17.

Arizona State (5-8) enjoyed the better of the play in a scoreless opening 20 minutes, holding an 11-7 shot advantage. The Knights took control in the middle frame, however, outshooting the visitors 16-1 in the stanza en route to a 2-0 lead through 40 minutes.

Fossen opened the scoring at 8:47 when he took a pass from sophomore Sam Vigneault and connected from the side of the net. Senior linemate Christian Powers also assisted.

At 13:39, D'Arrisso picked up a loose puck during a scrum in front and lifted in his second goal of the season. Linemates, senior Simon Bessette and freshman Marly Quince assisted.

Clarkson added two more goals to close out the victory, improving their record at Cheel Arena to 6-1-1 on the year.

Fossen netted his team-high seventh goal of the season at 2:52 with Vigneault and sophomore defenseman Kelly Summers assisting.

Junior defenseman Bryan Sinz made it 4-0 at 11:21 with his first career goal, off a shot from the blueline that found its way through a screen in front. Sophomore Brett Gervais, Clarkson's top center at the faceoff circle, assisted after winning a draw back to Sinz at the point.

The Sun Devils spoiled the shutout bid by Clarkson's junior goaltender Steve Perry when Ryan Ostertag scored with 2:31 remaining.

Perry finished with 16 saves, including 11 first-period stops. Robert Levin made 25 saves for Arizona State.

Clarkson was 0-of-2 on the power play and killed off the Sun Devils' lone man-advantage opportunity.
