CU Men's Lacrosse Preview - at Plattsburgh State (4/15)

With three games left on the Liberty League slate, the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team will take one final break from conference play on Wednesday when the team travels to face Plattsburgh State.

The Golden Knights enter the contest with a record of 5-5 overall and 2-2 in the Liberty League, while Plattsburgh comes in at 9-5 overall and 2-2 in the SUNYAC. Clarkson leads in the all-time series 7-6, but have lost four of the last five meetings, including games in 2013 and 2014 by a combined three goals.

Clarkson has been lead by a strong defensive effort all season, allowing fewer than 10 goals in seven of the 10 games and five goals or less on four occasions. Sophomore Nick Strandholm leads the Liberty League in goals against average (7.64 gpg) and is among the conference leaders in save percentage (58.4%), saves (104), and groundballs (35). Senior JD St. Croix, junior Keith Mierzwa and sophomore Jamie McBurney have combined for 47 groundballs and 27 caused turnovers among them, while Austin Case has also been active with 23 groundballs. 

Dylan Broomfield has excelled at getting the Clarkson offense going, winning 56.4% of his faceoffs and scooping up 50 groundballs, second in the Liberty League. Sophomore Ryan St. Croix leads the team with 23 points and 20 goals and is second in the conference in shots per game (7.6 spg). Senior Corey Herrington has found a scoring groove in the last three games, providing five goals and six assists in that span to move his numbers to eight goals and 13 assists on the season. Classmate Matt Gold has also continued his march towards 100 career points with 12 goals and nine assists this year, pushing him to 91 career points. 

Plattsburgh is among the top 25 percent in the country in scoring, ranking 45th in the nation with 12 goals of offense per game. Brendan Damm and Jack Felter have each accounted for 32 goals, but Damm has 55 points total. James Read has also chipped in 45 points on 21 goals and 24 assists and Ryan Hubbard has 36 points with 27 goals and nine helpers. Joey Kromer has a .571 winning percentage on faceoffs (180-for-315) with 87 groundballs, more than six per contest. 

Defensively, Matt Massaria has posted an 8.19 goals against average and a .598 save percentage in the crease. Peter Johann leads the team with 18 caused turnovers and James Grau has chipped in 12 caused turnovers. Andrew Sofroniou and Matt Renko have contributed 40 and 36 groundballs, respectively.
