Clarkson Closes Out 2016 at Northeastern

After a 20-day break the Clarkson University Hockey team resumes play with its final game of the 2016 portion of the schedule. The Golden Knights, guided by sixth-year head coach Casey Jones and assistants Phil Roy '00 and Josh Hauge, will play one non-league game in Boston this weekend, facing off against Hockey East foe Northeastern University on Friday in a 7:00 p.m. game at historic Matthews Arena.  

Clarkson stands at 9-7-3 overall, including a 4-2-1 mark against Hockey East foes. The Green and Gold close out 2016 in fourth place in the ECAC Hockey standings with a 5-3-1 league slate. The Knights have lost their last two games, both against Top-20 ranked teams. In its last action, Clarkson suffered its first road defeat of the season, falling at 19th-ranked St. Lawrence, 3-1, on December 9.  The Knights saw an eight-game unbeaten stretch (6-0-2) come to a close on December 3 as 8th-ranked Harvard skated past the Green and Gold 7-3 at Cheel Arena. 

Clarkson opens the New Year with a non-league game in Lake Placid against conference rival Rensselaer on Saturday, January 7. ECAC Hockey play resumes for the Green and Gold on January 13 with a game at Yale, the first of four straight league games on the road.

• The Golden Knights lead the all-time series against Northeastern, 14-6-1. The Huskies however, have won three of the last four meetings. In their last matchup, on November 30, 2002 Northeastern defeated the Green and Gold for the second straight time, winning 3-1 in Potsdam. 
• The game at St. Lawrence on December 9 began a stretch of seven straight game away from Cheel Arena for Clarkson. The Knights are 5-1-2 outside of Potsdam, going 5-1-1 in road games and a 0-0-1 in a neutral site contest.  Clarkson plays eight of its final 13 ECAC Hockey games on the road.
• Clarkson is 4-2-1 against Hockey East foes this season, its best mark against HEA competition since going 5-0-0 during the 1996-97 campaign. That was the only season the Knights recorded five victories against the other eastern league since the formation of Hockey East in 1984-85.  
• Clarkson is 7-3-2 when its scores first. The Knights had scored the opening goal in eight straight contests before that streak was stopped in the game at St. Lawrence on December 9.
• Freshman goaltender Jake Kielly has started 16 of Clarkson's first 19 games and posts a .919 save percentage and a 2.56 goals against average along with two shutouts. He has gone 5-2-2 in his last nine starts after missing weekend action on November 4-5 with an illness. He picked up his first career point with an assist in the game at St. Lawrence. Kielly was named Most Outstanding Player of the Shillelagh Tournament. (11/26). Kielly was named ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Month for November.
• Senior Jordan Boucher paces the Clarkson offense with 17 points on seven goals and 10 assists. Boucher leads all current Knights in career scoring with 59 points (24-35) through 96 games. 
• Freshman Devin Brosseau is second on the Green and Gold offensively with 15 points on five goals and 10 assists. He posts a team-high plus/minus at +8. Brosseau was named ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Month for October.
• Senior Troy Josephs is one of three Knights with 13 points. He has tallied a team-high eight goals to go along with a +5 rating. Josephs has come on strong recently with seven goals and three assists over the past 10 games.  
• Junior Sam Vigneault is also tied for third on the Knights in points with 13 (4-9).
• Rookie Sheldon Rempal (5-8) also has 13 points.
•  Freshman Nico Sturm follows right behind with 12 points (3-9).  
• Clarkson's Class of 2020 is the top producing freshman class in ECAC Hockey and is tied for sixth overall in the NCAA, averaging 2.84 points per game.  The Knights' seven rookie skaters, and Kielly (one assist) have accounted for 35% of Clarkson's offense with 54 points on 18 goals and 36 assists. 
• The Freshman Line centered by Sturm (3-7), left wing Brosseau (5-6) and right wing Rempal (5-7) has accounted for 13 goals and 20 assists over the past 15 games since skating together starting with the game at Providence (10/21).
James de Haas leads the Knights in scoring from the blueline with 10 points on fourgoals and six assists. 
• After missing the first nine games of the season nursing an injury defenseman Terrance Amorosa has made a big impact on the Knights' blueline as the Green and Gold have gone 6-2-2 with the junior back in the lineup. He has tallied a power-play goal and three assists through 10 games.  
• Clarkson is eighth in the country in penalty minutes, averaging 17 minutes per game. The Knights' penalty kill is rated 22nd in the nation at 84.7% (105-124). 
• The Knights' power-play is 31st in Division I at 17.4% (16-92). Clarkson is 6-4-2 when it scores on the power play and 3-3-1 when it does not.
•    Clarkson is tied for 21st in the PairWise Rankins (12/27).
• In its 95th season, Clarkson boasts 71 winning campaigns and a 1,404-842-152 all-time record for a .618 winning % since 1920-21.

•    Four current Golden Knights have been selected in the NHL Draft – de Haas (2012 Detroit - 6th rd, 170),  Terrance Amorosa (2013 Philadelphia - 5th rd, 189), Troy Josephs (2013 Pittsburgh - 7th rd, 209) and Kelly Summers (2014 Ottawa - 7th rd, 189)

Scouting Northeastern:
Guided by sixth-year head coach Jim Madigan, Northeastern owns a 6-7-4 overall record and stands in a tie for 10th place in Hockey East with a 1-6-2 league mark. The Huskies won their last game, skating to a 6-2 victory at Michigan State on December 18. Northeastern is 5-3-2 at Matthews Arena. The Huskies are 1-3-4 in games decided by one goal-or-less.

The Series:
After a 14-year hiatus Clarkson and Northeastern renew a rivalry that started with a 7-1 Clarkson win in Canton on December 22, 1951. The Knights lead the all-time series against the Huskies, 14-6-1. Northeastern, however, has won three of the last four meetings. In their last matchup, on November 30, 2002 Northeastern defeated the Green and Gold for the second straight time, winning 3-1 in Potsdam. Clarkson's last victory in the series was an overwhelming 12-1 triumph, on November 6, 1992 which stands as the Cheel Arena record for most goals scored in a single game by one team. The Knights, who have lost their last two games at Matthews Arena, last won on Northeastern's home ice on November 3, 1989, 5-3.
