CU Softball Improves to 6-0 in Florida with Third Straight Sweep

Clermont, FL – Another day saw another doubleheader sweep for the Clarkson University Softball team on Sunday, as the Golden Knights picked up a 12-6 win over Framingham State in the opener and a 5-1 victory over North Park University.

The Golden Knights have now won six straight in Florida to improve to 6-4 overall. The team will take a day off from competition, but will be back to play three more doubleheader on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday before returning to Potsdam.

Clarkson put up crooked numbers in the first three innings to take a 7-0 lead in the early going. Chelsea Elliott delivered a two-out single to plate Raeanna Dunn and then came around on a single from Liz Caggiano for a 2-0 lead in the first. Summer Lancette bashed a two-run homer in the second to give Clarkson a 4-0 lead, but it was the third where the game was decided with three runs. Elliott started the inning with a double and came home on a single from Caggiano and Ali Schwenzfeier delivered another RBI single before coming around herself to put the Knights up 7-0. The Rams got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth with a four-spot, capped by a two-run homer from Megan Downing, but Clarkson tacked on three more runs in the fifth. Framingham responded with two more runs in the bottom of the fifth, but the Knights put the game away with a run in the sixth and another in the seventh.

Schwenzfeier was 3-for-5, while Dunn, Elliott, Caggiano and Erika Jensen each recorded two hits. For Framingham, Kyle Boyle went 3-for-4 with three runs driven in.

In the second game, Clarkson scored all it would need in the top of the first. Raeanna Dunn led off with a double and then came around on an error to make the score 1-0, and Ali Schwenzfeier drove in a run with a ground out later in the frame. In the third, Clarkson scored two more with Jamie Bridge plating Dunn on a single up the middle. With runners on first and third, Bridge was thrown out trying to steal second, but that was enough to allow Sara Armstrong to come home to put the Knights up 4-0. In the bottom of the fifth North Park got on the scoreboard, but Clarkson tacked on an insurance run in the seventh. Summer Lancette led off with a bunt single, stole second, moved up to third on a ground out, and then Sara Armstrong grounded out to send Lancette scampering home.

Katie Pelton pitched her best game of the year, going six innings and allowing just four hits and no walks while striking out six. She also went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Knights. Bridge threw a scoreless seventh inning to cap off the win.
