Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | October 13, 2017

Knights Come Up Short at Vassar, 2-1

Poughkeepsie, NY – A goal in the final three minutes of the second half wasn't enough for the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team to overcome the two goals from Vassar College midway through the second half, as the Golden Knights suffered their third conference defeat in the Liberty League season.

The Golden Knights fell to 5-6-1 overall and 1-3-1 in conference games, while Vassar stayed unbeaten in league games at 4-0-1 and moved to 7-3-2 overall. Clarkson will look to get back on track on Saturday when it takes on Bard College.

After a quiet first half in which there were only two shots on goal, the offenses came alive for a combined three goals in the final 45 minutes. Vassar broke through in the 62nd minute when Jose Novas received a pass from Mattie Mrlik across the box in front and was able to tap it into an open net. The Brewers scored what proved to be the game-winning goal a little over 11 minutes later at the 72:31 mark as Jonathan Bow tallied his first goal of the season on a pass from Kevin Baliat.

Clarkson had a glimmer of hope late in the game when they cut the deficit to one with less than three minutes to go. Senior Brian Kroetz sent a pass through the final 15 yards of the field to Aidan Subra, where the sophomore finished off the play for his first goal of the season. Unfortunately for the Knights, neither team was able to record a shot for the remainder of the contest, and Clarkson came up short in its comeback effort.

Vassar finished with a 12-7 edge in shots, though the Brewers had only four attempts on the Clarkson frame, compared to the Knights' three shots on goal. Clarkson won the battle of corner kick chances by a rate of 5-1, with four coming in the first half. Clarkson keeper Ian Roeloffs finished with two saves, while Vassar goalkeeper Matt Marcelino made one stop for the Brewers.
