Knights Back on Winning Track with 12-4 Win Over Hartwick

Potsdam, NY – Seniors Ryan DaRin and Ryan St. Croix combined for eight goals for the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team as the Golden Knights jumped back into the win column with a 12-4 victory over Hartwick College on Saturday at Hantz Turf Field.

The Golden Knights improved to 4-1 on the season, matching last year's win total through mid-March. Hartwick saw its record evened at 2-2 in 2017. Clarkson will be back in action on Tuesday when it hosts crosstown rival Potsdam State.

DaRin tallied an unassisted goal at 11:38 to get things going and he continued on the offensive with two more goals in the next five minutes to give the Knights a 3-0 lead. Up 4-0, Ryan St. Croix started the second quarter with a nifty behind the back goal on a pass from Conor Bartlett as Clarkson continued to put the pressure on the Hawks. Hartwick had its chances, but only the Knights would score for the first 27-plus minutes. DaRin scored at the 4:43 mark to put Clarkson out to an 8-0 lead before the Hawks finally got on the board at 2:11 when David Demand found Sam Ferguson. However, the Knights went into the locker room with further momentum as St. Croix scored with 47.7 seconds left.

Clarkson's offense cooled in the third and fourth quarters, though the Knights would gain a double-digit lead at the 12:02 mark when Bartlett found the net for his first goal of the game, making it 12-2. With their feet off the pedal, the Knights put in numerous reserves to keep Hartwick at bay. The Hawks did tack on a pair of goals in the waning moments including a goal as time expired in the fourth quarter.

DaRin finished with five goals, all in the first half, and St. Croix chipped in four points on three goals and an assist. Bartlett and Scott Dosser each had a goal and an assist, while Sam Groves and Kyle Brown also scored one goal apiece. Marc Simmons picked up three groundballs and caused a pair of turnovers and Cole German also added three groundballs. Ryan Gabriel won eight of his 12 tries on faceoffs, while both Nick Strandholm and Colin Holt made two saves in the Clarkson crease.

For Hartwick, Eric Schweitzer scored twice and picked up four groundballs while Sam Ferguson and Cordell Armstrong each scored one goal. Wyatt Long and David Demand also each recorded an assist. Defensively, Garrison Wojtas caused three turnovers and scooped up four groundballs. Connor O'Brien made 14 saves in 60 minutes for Hartwick.

Clarkson finished the game with a modest 34-32 edge in shots, though they led 23-10 in that category at the half. The Knights also put 26 shots on the Hartwick frame, while the Hawks put 17 of their 32 shots on goal.
