Knights Comeback Falls Short in 9-7 Defeat at Rochester

Rochester, NY – Four quick goals put the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team in an early hole, and the Golden Knights could never completely overcome the deficit, falling 9-7 to the University of Rochester in Liberty League action Friday afternoon.

The Golden Knights dropped to 9-3 overall and 2-2 in the Liberty League, while Rochester moved to 8-2 and 4-1. Clarkson looks to get back on the winning track on Saturday when the team takes on RIT.

The Yellowjackets scored four times in the first eight-plus minutes and had the Knights down quickly, with Clarkson getting few opportunities. The Knights didn't win any of the first five draws and didn't register their first shot until the 10 minutes had expired. Kate Dillon got Clarkson off the schneid with a goal at the 19:23 mark, beginning a three-goal run by Clarkson that pull the Knights to within one with less than two minutes remaining in the half. Rochester returned its advantage to two goals with a score in the waning seconds of the half.

Rochester doubled up the Knights with a goal in the first moments of the second half, but Clarkson again cut the margin to one with back-to-back goals from Jaid Baytos and Emma Andrews. The latter score came with 20:10 left, but Clarkson wouldn't get another goal for another 19 minutes as Rochester steadily increased its lead back up to four (9-5). Baytos scored with 54 seconds left and Dillon found Abby Collins with 26 ticks left, but Clarkson ran out of time in hopes of completing the comeback.

Clarkson held a 27-24 advantage in shots (25-21 in shots on goal). Abby Collins and Jaid Baytos each scored two goals, and Dillon added a goal and an assist. Freshmen Katie Sergeant and Emma Andrews each added a goal and Stephanie Scaia scooped up three groundballs. Taylor Collins earned three draws and Baytos also caused two turnovers. Samantha Gladd denied 12 shots in the Clarkson crease.

For Rochester, Conley Ernst was busy in goal, making 18 saves with 12 coming in the second half. Jamie Wallisch scored three times and also added three groundballs and three caused turnovers.
