2017 Clarkson Women's Soccer Preview

Over the course of the 510 minutes in the final five games of 2016, the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team allowed just four goals to end the season on an impressive defensive streak. Now, in 2017, the Golden Knights will look to combine their early season scoring punch of last season with that high level of defense in an effort to earn a Liberty League playoff spot in November.

The Golden Knights rolled out four straight wins last year to begin first-year head coach Kelsey Yam's career, but a mid-season slump slowed the Knights' ability to rack up many more victories. Regardless, Clarkson ended 2016 with 30 goals, only the third time in the program's history that the team reached that level of offense. Yam, along with first-year assistant Steve Domino, will look to help the Knights take advantage of a heavily-loaded home schedule, as Clarkson has eight games in the first five weeks of the season at Hantz Turf Field, beginning with tilts against Salve Regina and SUNY Geneseo this weekend.

Clarkson will miss the departure, due to graduation, of Lauren Flynn, as the forward ranked among the conference leaders in goals and overall scoring, but the Knights have plenty of talented players to make up for the loss. First-year collegians Giulia Mahoney, Danielle Martin, and Camryn Careccia combined for six goals and four assists in their first year, proving they have plenty of scoring acumen for 2017 and beyond. Additionally, junior Summer Gillespie recorded three points as she earned a lot of extra attention from opposing defenses following an 18-point bow in her freshman season.

Although the offense will be on the young side, Clarkson's backline has ample experience to keep scores low. Senior Courtney Black, a former Liberty League All-Star, actually ranked second on the team in scoring as a junior with 10 points on four goals and two assists, but it was her ability on defense that got her the all-star nod two years ago. She is joined by classmates Paige Spittler, Abby Gruneisen, and Meranda Turner on defense, as well as junior Victoria Goudreau and Mia Fiacchi.

Down the stretch in 2016, sophomore goalkeeper Elyse Green truly came into her own, including a total of 15 saves in a pair of double overtime ties against Skidmore and St. Lawrence to close out the season. She will have competition for the spot in 2017, including Western Kentucky transfer Jenna Rohlin and first-year collegians Hannah Wendling and Jessica Adams.
