Ellis Drops 36 in Clarkson's 84-77 Win Over Vassar

Potsdam, NY – Junior guard Liam Ellis finished with a career-high 36 points, shooting 12-for-20 from the field and 10-for-10 from the line, to lead the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team to an 84-77 win over Vassar College in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights picked up another much-needed win in the league to keep their playoff points alive, improving to 8-10 overall and 4-7 in conference games. Vassar dropped to 5-13 overall and 4-7 in the Liberty League.

For the second straight night, Felix Llanos's impressive performance of November 19, 2011 was remembered thanks to a current Clarkson player's standout game. Liam Ellis's 36 points on Saturday were the most by any Clarkson guard since Llanos dropped 46 against Keuka more than six years ago. Ellis scored his points in an entirely different fashion, getting the majority on drives to the lane and utilizing an array of moves off his pivot to get close looks at the rim.

Ellis was hot from the start for the Knights, which as a team came out firing. Clarkson scored the first 12 points of the game in just three minutes and Ellis had 11 points through the first 5:30, putting the Knights up 18-5 at that point. The Brewers didn't panic at the deficit, however. Though Vassar trailed by as many as 15 points at the midway mark of the first half, the Brewers chipped away with 3-pointers from Jesse Browne and Alex Seff late in the half. Two more 3-pointers from BJ White and Lance Tebay, whose three came on Vassar's last possession of the half, pulled the Brewers even at 40-40 at the break.

Vassar would score the first two baskets of the second half to take a four-point lead, but Clarkson quickly recovered thanks to Ellis and Matt Higgins, putting the Knights back up by eight after the latter nailed a pair of free throws at the 12:13 mark. The Brewers rallied to tie the game twice midway through the half, but two jumpers from Higgins returned Clarkson's modest advantage. Down the stretch, Ellis assured the Knights of the win by getting key points in the paint and drawing fouls for easy chances at the free throw line. Vassar's Jesse Browne hit a 3-pointer with 17 seconds left to pull the Brewers back to within one, but Ellis hit six free throws in the final 15 seconds, including two extras following a Browne technical foul, to assure Clarkson of the win.

In addition to his career-high 36 points, Ellis added in nine rebounds and four assists. Higgins recovered from a slow start, scoring 17 of his 22 points in the second half. Senior Gary Hanley was a force inside and enjoyed a solid all-around game with 9 points, 9 rebounds, 6 blocks and 3 assists, going 4-for-5 from the field. For Vassar, Browne finished with 21 points and five assists and Paul Grinde came off the bench to record a near double-double with 16 points and eight boards. Lance Tebay also performed well with 13 points and seven rebounds.
