Clarkson Sweeps Weekend with 4-0 Win Over Bard

Potsdam, NY – With an overwhelming advantage in shots in the first half, it seemed only a matter of time before the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team would start to convert, and the Golden Knights did just that with three second-half goals to claim a 4-0 Liberty League victory over Bard College on Saturday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field.

The Golden Knights improved to 9-3-1 overall and 3-2-1 in conference games, while the Raptors fell to 3-10-1, 0-6-0. With four games left to play, Clarkson looks to reach double digits in wins for the first time since the 2001 season.

In the previous seven games, the Golden Knights scored just three times but still managed to go 3-3-1 in that stretch. On Saturday, Clarkson rediscovered its early-season offensive swagger with four goals. Sophomore Mack Walton ripped a shot from wide and outside of the 18 that curved into the upper 90 portion of the game at 25:08 to put the Golden Knights on the board. It was Walton's second goal of the season.

Clarkson enjoyed a 13-2 edge in shots in the first half, but the Knights recorded a comparatively low eight shots in the second half. However, Clarkson's shots found their mark more frequently in the second half. One was rather simple as Walton sent a wide cross to Matt Adamou as the classmates paired up for a goal at the 51:00 mark when Adamou easily finished off the pass to make the score 2-0. A little over six minutes later, James Homan hit a header in off a set piece pass from Chris Afonso (57:22) to put the Knights up 3-0.

Clarkson added an insurance goal late in the 73rd minute. A throw in by the Knights nearly produced a goal, but the ball was knocked out to give the Raptors a goal kick. However, that attempted clear turned into an immediate offensive chance for the Knights. The goal kick found the foot of Chris Jupin in the midfield and he volleyed the ball forward to Stephen Klimek. The junior then outmaneuvered his lone defender and sent a groundball past the Bard goalkeeper at 72:59 to put Clarkson up 4-0.

Clarkson ended with a 21-5 lead in shots and a 9-1 edge in corner kick chances. Riley McDonald made four saves in a little under 80 minutes and shared the shutout with sophomore Noah Bell, who wasn't called upon to make a save in his 10-plus minutes of relief work. For Bard, Logan Leppo denied three shots.
