Clarkson Rallies to Win in Five Over Geneseo

Frostburg, MD – Numerous standout performances highlighted the Clarkson University Volleyball team's come-from-behind win on Friday evening, as the Golden Knights rallied from a two-set deficit to beat SUNY Geneseo 22-25, 20-25, 25-20, 25-19, 15-10 at the Frostburg Invitational.

The Golden Knights won their fourth straight match to improve to 15-9 overall, while Geneseo dropped to 20-8. Clarkson faces Salisbury and host Frostburg on Saturday.

In the opener, the two teams went back and forth for 12 ties through the first 42 points, the largest lead belonging to Geneseo on two occasions at three points. Unfortunately, for the Golden Knights, one of those three-point margins came at the very end with Geneseo claiming a three-point win.

Set two saw Clarkson edge out to a three-point lead at 10-7 following a Maddie Bredehoeft kill, but Geneseo rallied to score five of the next six points to take a 12-11 lead. Although Clarkson regained the lead at 17-16 when Gillian Kurtic connected for a kill, Geneseo once again took a tie late (19-19, the eight tie of the set) and tallied six of the final seven points for a 2-0 lead. Despite the defeat, Kate Isaksen was impressive in the set, recording 15 digs in game two alone.

Nothing changed in set three, except for the outcome. Clarkson and Geneseo were tied 11 times in the first 24 points, including 12-12. The Golden Knights owned a modest 16-15 lead, but the Green and Gold scored four of the next five, capped by block assists from Rachel Reusch and Kendall Cheval. Although Geneseo got back within three (21-18), Reusch picked up back-to-back kills to put the lead at five, and Meghan Edmund recorded a kill for point number 25. Reusch was particularly dominant in the set, scoring seven kills against no errors in 13 swings.

The fourth set found Clarkson down by three early, but the ties would be few and far between in the game. An ace from Rachel Reusch put the Golden Knights up 17-12, but Geneseo pulled to within two, forcing Clarkson to call a timeout. The break did its work, as Kurtic recorded a solo block to begin a five-point run for the Green and Gold, including two aces from Amanda Collins. Again, Isaksen performed well with 13 digs in the set.

Geneseo scored five of the first seven points, all coming on kills, in set number five and the Knights appeared to be in control. However, a kill from Amanda Collins on a dump set and an attack error stopped the Geneseo momentum. The reprieve for the Golden Knights was brief, though, as two points gave Geneseo a three-point edge at the switch. It didn't take long for Clarkson to rally back and tie things as Kurtic and Reusch scored kills and an attack error put things at 9-9. A Kate Isaksen ace gave Clarkson its first lead at 10-9, forcing Geneseo into a timeout. The stoppage did not halt Clarkson's momentum, though, as Cheval and Edmund notched kills to make it 12-9. Geneseo got a kill from Maddie McLaughlin, but a kill from Edmund, an attack error, and a kill for Reusch closed out the set and the match.

Junior Kate Isaksen set another career-high in digs with 53, surpassing the 51 she recorded just six days ago against Skidmore. She now has four of the top nine single-match dig totals in NCAA Division III this year and her total on Friday pushed her to 2,375 in her career, now second on Clarkson's all-time list. Classmate Rachel Reusch tied her career-high in kills with 22, making just one error on 57 attempts. Sophomore Amanda Collins came within one assist of tying her career-high with 57, adding 20 digs and 3 aces. Kendall Cheval produced 14 kills and 22 digs, Maddie Bredehoeft scored 13 kills, and Meghan Edmund collected 29 digs. Clarkson hit .300 in the fifth set (11-2-30).

For Geneseo, Bridget Lougen had 16 kills and Maddie McLaughlin added 11 kills. Gabrielle Ayzenberg tossed in 38 digs and Emily Ast was busy with 43 assists and 24 digs. Geneseo hit 52-27-240 for a .104 hitting percentage, one of only seven times this year that it has been held under .105.
