CU Softball Preview - at Rensselaer/RIT (4/21-22)

Back on the road again this weekend, a revamped schedule has the Clarkson University Softball team heading to Rensselaer on Saturday and then rolling on Route 90 to take on RIT on Sunday as the Golden Knights look to make up for lost games from rain outs in the month of April.

The Series vs. Rensselaer: Clarkson has split against the Engineers in each of the past two regular-season doubleheaders, though Rensselaer won the season series in 2017 thanks to a win in the conference tournament. RPI has won seven of nine games against the Golden Knights.

The Series vs. RIT: The Golden Knights have met the Tigers 10 times since the dawn of the Clarkson program in 2014, winning four games in that stretch. Three of the wins came in 2017 as the Knights split the regular-season doubleheader with RIT but beat the Tigers twice in the Liberty League Tournament (4-0, 5-2).

Key Stats for Clarkson (5-18-1, 0-4 Liberty League): With more games being played, averages have begun to stabilize in the Liberty League, but junior transfer Kat Plescow remains among the league leaders with a .420 batting average (second in the conference). Summer Lancette has hit a bit of a rough patch, but she is still batting .407/.493/.576, with her on-base percentage the top figure in the league. Hannah Bowen is tied for sixth in runs scored (19) and ranks 10th in hits (25).

Key Stats for Rensselaer (17-7, 7-1 Liberty League): The Engineers are looking to lock up conference tournament hosting rights after another strong start in league play. Five regulars are hitting .335 or better and four out of those five are reaching base at a .390 clip or better. Rensselaer has swiped 44 bases in 47 tries, led by Veronica DeStefano, who hasn't been caught in 14 attempts. Sarah Harms and Jaime Cleasby combine for pitching duties, with Harms claiming 12 wins with three shutouts and a 1.97 earned run average.

Key Stats for RIT (5-13, 1-3 Liberty League): The Tigers rank at the bottom of the league in offense, hitting .197/.246/.251 with only 36 runs scored in 18 games. Danielle Hotz has the best batting line for RIT, hitting .326/.354/.391. Opposing pitching staffs have accumulated 80 strikeouts in 115 innings with a 1.34 earned run averages against RIT. Once the Tigers are on base, they don't run much, stealing four bases in five tries in 18 contests.
