Clarkson Ends Season With Doubleheader Split Versus SLU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
Potsdam, NY – Although neither team got to participate in the Liberty League Tournament, both the Clarkson University Softball team and St. Lawrence can say that they won on the last day of the season as the two teams split the final conference doubleheader of the 2018 season on Tuesday afternoon at Scott Field.

The Golden Knights, which won the first game 2-0, concluded their season with a record of 8-25-1 overall and 3-11 in conference games, while St. Lawrence, winners of game two 7-2, closed out at 13-17 and 5-9.

The opener moved along at an impressive clip as the two teams traded zeroes in the first two frames before Clarkson netted a pair in the bottom of the third. Sam Mennig began the inning with a single and moved on a groundout and a sacrifice bunt, scoring on Hannah Bowen's single to left. Bowen then scored all the way from first on a double to left-center by Summer Lancette, making it 2-0.

St. Lawrence's biggest threat came in the top of the sixth when Angelina Carney, Elle Gray and Skylar Hein all singled to load the bases. However, Clarkson starting pitcher Sam Mennig retired Alexandra Barter with a strikeout to end the inning. The leadoff hitter reached for the Saints again in the seventh, but Mennig would limit the damage with two strikeouts and a pop up to end the game.

Mennig finished with six strikeouts in seven innings, allowing five hits and two walks in the shutout. Caroline Young took the loss for the Saints, allowing both runs in three innings.

Game two saw much more offense as St. Lawrence pounded out 16 hits in seven innings, though it was not until the seventh inning that the Saints broke the game open. St. Lawrence scored twice in the third inning on back-to-back doubles from Angelina Carney and Skylar Hein to put the Saints up 2-0, and the visitors added another run in the fourth on a triple from Deanna Sullivan. Clarkson responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth as Sumer Lancette doubled home Samm Swiesz, and Kyrstin Messier plated Danielle Whitham with an infield ground out.

St. Lawrence sent eight hitters to the plate in the top of the seventh as only a sacrifice bunt could retire one of the first six hitters in the innings. Finally a line out and a ground out ended the innings, but the damage was done as the Saints scored four times in the frame.

Both Danielle Whitham and Summer Lancette had two hits in game two for the Knights, while Leah Allen took the loss. For St. Lawrence, Deanna Sullivan went 4-for-4 and scored twice and both Angelina Carney and Skylar Hein were 3-for-4 in St. Lawrence's 16-hit attack.
