RPI Ends Clarkson's Liberty League Run in 10-7 First Round Defeat

Troy, NY – An Aubrey Borgesi goal in the first eight minutes gave the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team an early lead, but the Golden Knights played from behind for the final 47 minutes and could not quite complete the comeback in a 10-7 Liberty League First Round loss to Rensselaer on Tuesday afternoon.

The Golden Knights dropped to 12-6 overall, tied for the most wins in the program's 40-year history. Rensselaer improved to 9-5-1 and advances to the Liberty League Semifinals against William Smith this weekend.

Borgesi tallied at 22:02 in the first half, but Rensselaer scored two goals in just 66 seconds midway through the half to take a 2-1 lead. The two teams battled back and forth with solid defensive efforts for much of the opening period, but Rensselaer finally solved the Knights defense in the final five minutes as Maddy Aslansan and Shyla Niemann scored to give the Engineers a 4-1 advantage at the break.

Clarkson's Katie Sergeant scored on a free-position opportunity at the start of the second half to trim the deficit to two goals, but the Engineers rallied for two of their own in quick succession to take a 6-2 lead. That margin would remain fairly static throughout the rest of the contest, though Clarkson put a scare into the Engineers late in the game when Sergeant scored with 6:42 to go, making it 9-7. That goal proved to be a near final gasp on offense for the Knights as Clarkson attempted only two more shots in the game, neither of which ended up on the RPI frame. Nicole Zimmer scored at the 1:55 mark to put Rensselaer up by three and that proved to be the final spread.

Clarkson held a 33-28 lead in shots, though both teams tied in shots on goal with 22 apiece. Clarkson also won the battle of groundballs (18-17) and failed only once in 16 clear attempts. Aleena Milinski proved to be the difference for RPI, making 15 saves on 22 shots on goal.

Sophomore Katie Sergeant led Clarkson's attack with four points, scoring three goals and adding an assist. Taylor Collins, Abby Collins, Emma Andrews and Aubrey Borgesi each accounted for one goal for Clarkson. Taylor Collins also led the Knights with six groundballs while Abby Collins notched three groundballs. Both players also caused three turnovers. Samantha Gladd made 12 saves in the Clarkson crease.

For RPI, four different players scored two points, with Morgan Doyle tallying two goals and Allie Claroni, Lauren Guiry, and Shyla Niemann each adding a goal and an assist. Erin Goodwin led the team with four groundballs and Nora Molino snatched six draws. Laurel Dean also produced three groundballs and three caused turnovers.
