Isaksen Tops 2000 Career Digs as Knights Drop Four-Set Match at Oswego

Oswego, NY – An inconsistent offense doomed the Clarkson University Volleyball team on Wednesday night, as the Golden Knights dropped a four-set non-league match to Oswego State 25-16, 20-25, 25-23, 25-14.

The Golden Knights fell to 7-7 with the loss while Oswego State moved to 12-6. Clarkson will have close to a full week to regroup as the Green and Gold are off this weekend and don't return to action until next Tuesday when they face conference foe St. Lawrence.

The Golden Knights struggled to get a foothold on offense in the first set, but mostly were out of sorts in general with eight attack errors, four service errors and two reception errors, providing Oswego enough wiggle room of its own to get through most of its offensive issues. However, after an early setback on the first few points of the second set, Clarkson found a groove midway through the second set, turning a three-point deficit into a two-point lead very quickly as kills from Meghan Edmund and Rachel Reusch and an ace from Edmund gave the Knights a 17-15 lead. Though the set was knotted back up at 19-19 a few moments later, Clarkson scored six of the final seven points to switch momentum back in its favor with a 25-20 win.

Set number three saw both teams rattle off runs, but Clarkson unfortunately came up on the short end at the conclusion of the game. The Knights turned a one-point deficit into a five-point lead with six straight points (12-7) early on, but saw that advantage evaporate when Oswego responded with eight straight points. Clarkson then pushed back with seven straight to take a 19-15 lead, and still enjoyed a four-point advantage at 21-17 following a Lakers attack error. Though Oswego rebounded, Clarkson appeared to be in control on a Rachel Reusch kill which made it 23-22, but a service error, attack error and reception error switched things back to the Lakers' favor.

The final points of the third set haunted Clarkson in the fourth as the Knights got off to a slow start and trailed 10-2. The Knights could never trim the margin to less than six points and finished the set down by double digits.

Junior Kate Isaksen recorded 28 digs for the Golden Knights, surpassing 2000 for her Clarkson career to become just the third member of that club in program history. Classmate Rachel Reusch added 11 kills and five block assists. In her first collegiate action, Megan McEwen came off the bench to record six kills and four blocks, including two solo efforts, with most of her contributions coming in the second set. Amanda Collins and Haley Aud each contributed 14 assists and Gillian Kurtic added six kills and four aces.

For Oswego State, Alison Sullivan scored 13 kills with a .423 hitting percentage and Shauna O'Flaherty hit .368 with seven kills. Skylar Bechard had 20 digs and Mira Legnon-Bozman produced 15 digs. Julia Flohr and Alison Berger tossed in 20 and 14 assists, respectively, with the latter also contributing four aces.
