Knights Look to Extend Win Streak in New England

Wth a nation-leading current eight-game winning streak powered by top-10-ranked offensive and defensive efforts, Clarkson University is enjoying an impressive roll as the opening month of the New Year comes to a close.

Guided by eighth-year head coach Casey Jones and assistants Josh Hauge and Brent Brekke, the Golden Knights are building momentum as the stretch run of the 2018-19 campaign approaches. Ranked 9/10th in the national polls. Clarkson owns a 16-6 overall record and is one point out of first place in the ECAC Hockey standings with a fourth place 7-3 league mark. 

The Knights will face a challenging task to keep their winning ways intact as they close out a four-game road trip at Harvard and Dartmouth this weekend. The Green and Gold have swept this series in New England only once in the past 11 seasons, taking both games in the 2013-14 campaign.  Both ECAC Hockey games are 7:00 p.m. starts and can be viewed livestream on ESPN+ and listened to on B99.3 FM.

• This past weekend, Clarkson posted road wins at Yale, 4-2, and Brown, 4-0, as seven different players accounted for the eight goals and junior goaltender Jake Kielly turned aside 47 of 49 shots.
• The Green and Gold are 5-0 in the New Year and have not lost since early December. Clarkson has outscored its opponents by a combined score of 30-8 during the current eight-game winning streak.
• The Knights and Crimson will be meeting for the 125th time in their all-time series, which first began with a 2-1 Clarkson win in Lake Placid on December 28, 1935. The Knights also won in Lake Placid in the last meeting, overcoming a 4-1 deficit just six seconds into the third period to knock off the Crimson 5-4 in overtime in the 2018 ECAC Hockey semifinals on March 16. Harvard leads the all-time series 57-55-12. The Crimson have gone 6-3-1 over the past 10 meetings. 
• Clarkson holds a decisive 72-30-7 advantage over Dartmouth in their all-time series, but the Big Green are coming off their first regular-season sweep of the Knights in 12 years. Clarkson saw a three-game winning streak end against Dartmouth in their first meeting last season as the Big Green skated away with a 3-2 triumph at Cheel Arena on January 20. Dartmouth also earned a 3-2 victory at Thompson Arena on February 16.  The teams are tied 5-5 over the last 10 games. 
• Clarkson's defensive effort ranks tied for second in the NCAA, allowing only 1.86 goals per game (behind only Bowling Green's 1.80).
• Although the Knights do not have one player ranked among the top 15 point-per-game producers in the nation, Clarkson's offense is averaging 3.45 goals per game, tied for eighth in the NCAA.
• The Knights' scoring margin is 4th in the NCAA at 1.59.
• Starting all 22 games, Jake Kielly ranks among the NCAA's best in all the major goaltending categories.  He posts .931 save percentage (6th in the nation), a 1.82 goals against average (7th) and is tied for most wins with 16. The NCAA's active leader in career shutouts with 15, Kielly has four whitewashes this season (tied for 2nd). He has allowed two-or-fewer goals in 17 of the 22 games. During the current eight-game winning streak, he posts a .955 SP and a 0.99 GAA. Kielly ranks 7th on the Green and Gold's all-time win list with a 54-32-11 career record.  He was named MVP of the Desert Hockey Classic, gained ECAC Hockey October Goaltender of the Month honors and  has earned ECAC Hockey goaltender of the Week accolades three times this season (11/5, 11/19, 12/31). Kielly was named one of the 20 Division I goaltenders to the watch list for the 2019 Mike Richter Award, which annually honors the most outstanding goaltender in the NCAA.
• Junior co-captain Nico Sturm leads the Green and Gold's balanced offensive effort with 26 points on a team-high 11 goals and a team-high 15 assists. He has tallied at least one point in 20 of the first 22 games, and has a current nine-game point streak with 11 points (5-6) since December 7. Strum was the only Knight with goals in both wins this weekend.He is tied for 16th in the nation in points per game (1.18). ECAC Hockey's Best Defensive Forward last season, Sturm holds a team-high +16 plus/minus rating. He is Clarkson's top center at the faceoff circle, winning 58.4% (195-139) of his draws. Sturm is bidding to become the next Golden Knight to join the century club with 84 career points (33-51) in 101 games. He was named ECAC Hockey Player of the Week on December 31.
• Six other Golden Knights are scoring in double figures.  Through the first 20 games, 21 Knights have scored at least one goal and 23 of 24 skaters (with the exception of freshman defenseman Cam Ginnetti, who join the team in the second semester) have recorded at least one point. 
• Junior Haralds Egle is second on the Clarkson scoring charts with a career-high 24 points. He scored his 10th  goal of the season, a career high, to close out the Knights' scoring in Friday's victory at Yale. 
• A pair of defensemen follow closely behind on the scoring charts with senior Aaron Thow chipping in16 points (5-11) and junior Greg Moro recording 15 (5-10).
• Thow has made a big offensive impression during the current win streak with with three goals and four assists since December 8. 
• Co-Captain, junior Devin Brosseau has tallied at least one point in each of the last four games to move into a tie for third on the Clarkson scoring chart. He has recorded seven goals and eight assists. Brosseau connected for his third power-play goal of the season with the Knights' second goal at Yale. 
• Clarkson defensemen are chipping in 29.9% of the offense, recording 61 points on 18 goals and 43 assists from the blueline.  All eight of the Knight rearguards (with the exception of Ginnetti) have tallied at least one goal.
• The Green and Gold have scored at least three goals in each of their 16 victories and have not given up more than two in the wins. 
 • The Knights have tallied the opening goal in 18 of the 22 games, going 14-4 when they get on the scoreboard first.
• The Knights are 15-0-0 when leading after two periods and 0-5 when trailing through 40 minutes.
• Clarkson starts fast and finishes strong, outscoring the opponents 25-11 in the first period and 29-11 in the final 20  minutes of regulation. The Green and Gold hold a 21-19 goal edge in the middle frame.
• Clarkson has played in 11 games that have been decided by three-or-more goals, going 9-2 in those contests. 
• The Knights are 9-0-0 when scoring more than three goals.
• A big reason for the Knights' stingy goals allowed average has been the improved play of the penalty-killing units.  Since a dismal 2-of-6 shorthanded effort  in the 6-3 loss at Canisius (11/10), Clarkson has allowed just two power-play goals in the opponents' last 50 man-advantage chances (96.1%) over the last 14 games, with Yale accounting for both goals. For the year, the Knights are 84.9% (73-86) on the penalty kill, 13th in NCAA.
• Clarkson's power play is ranked 16 in Division I, clicking at 21% (17-81). The Knights went 2-of-6 (1-of-3 both nights) in the weekend sweep at Yale and Brown.
• Depsite playing in only l5 of the first 22 games because of an injury late in the 2018 portion of the shedule, Josh Dunne has emerged as one of the top rookie forwards in the conference.  The freshman center leads Clarkson's Class of 2022 in scoring with 12 points on  seven goals and five assists.  He has scored twice on the power play and netted three game-winners. He scored the deciding goal unassisted in the victory at Yale. Since coming back from injury, Dunne has tallied three goals and two assists in the past seven games. He posts a +9 plus/minus rating.
• Freshman center Anthony Callin recorded his first career mutli-point game with a goal and an assist in Saturday's win at Brown. He has scored two goals and two assists over the past four games. 
• The Knights' nine-member freshman class has combined to skate in 138 games (most of any Clarkson class) and has contribued 21% of the scoring with 14 goals and 28 assists.
• All three of sophomore defenseman Connor McCarthy's goals have come on the power play.  After recording just one assist in nine games as a rookie last season, McCarthy has tallied eight points playing in all 22 games this year. He holds +5 plus/minus rating.
• Sophomore Jack Jacome ended an 11-game goal-scoring drought with the opening score in the 5-2 win over RPI (1/12) and followed up with an assist in both wins this past weekend. He has 15 points on four goals and 11 assists in 22 games.
• Senior Juho Jokiharju scored his first goal of the season and sixth of his career with the Knights' second score in the victory at Brown. 
• Senior Marly Quince recorded his fourth career two-point outing with a pair of assists in Saturday's win at Brown.  He has a +8 plus/minus rating.
• Junior defenseman Jordan Schneider leads the team in block shots with 34.
• Devin Brosseau has been named has one of the 17 nominees for 2019 Hockey Humanitarian Award.  The award is presented annually to college hockey's finest citizen — a student-athlete who makes significant contributions not only to his or her team but also to the community-at-large through leadership in volunteerism. Finalists for the 2019 Hockey Humanitarian Award will be announced in February. The 2019 recipient will be honored in a ceremony on Friday, April 12 as part of the NCAA Men's Frozen Four weekend in Buffalo, N.Y. Brosseau is Clarkson's team leader on all the Golden Knights' community service projects and always donates his time. Brosseau, who served as an assistant captain as a sophomore, has been a leading contributor on the ice throughout his Clarkson career as a left wing on the Knights' top lines. Through 99 career games, he has recorded 69 points on 25 goals and 44 assists. 
• Devin Brosseau and Nico Sturm have been named "Robert E. Empie '68 Men's Hockey Team Captains" while Marly Quince and Jake Kielly will serve as assistant captains. 
• Last year's leading scorer Sheldon Rempal, who left the Clarkson program after his sophomore campaign to sign a professional contract with the Los Angeles Kings, has skated seven NHL games. Rempal has been selected to participate in the 2019 AHL All-Star Classic on January 27-28 in Springfield, MA. He leads LA's AHL affilate the  Ontario Reign in scoring with 26 points (9-17) in 27 games.
• In its 97th season, Clarkson boasts 73 winning campaigns and a 1,452-868-160 all-time record for a .618 winning percentage since 1920-21.

Vs Harvard -The Knights and Crimson will be meeting for the 125th time in their all-time series, which first began with a 2-1 Clarkson win in Lake Placid on December 28, 1935. The Knights also won in Lake Placid in the last meeting, overcoming a 4-1 deficit just six seconds into the third period to knock off the Crimson 5-4 in overtime in the 2018 ECAC Hockey semifinals on March 16. Harvard, which leads the all-time series 57-55-12, was unbeaten in the last four meetings (3-0-1) leading up to that game, including a wild 6-6 tie at Cheel Arena on January 19 and a 5-2 win in Cambridge on February 17. The Crimson have gone 6-3-1 over the past 10 meetings. 
Jack Jacome has three goals and two assists through his first three games against Harvard. Haralds Egle also has five points in the series with one goal and four assists through five games. Jake Kielly posts a .870 save percentage, a 3.97 GAA and a 1-3-1 mark in five games against Harvard.

Vs Dartmouth - Clarkson holds a decisive 72-30-7 advantage over Dartmouth in their all-time series, wich began with a 4-1 win in Hanover, NH on February 4, 1929. However,  the Big Green are coming off their first regular-season sweep of the Knights in 12 years. Clarkson saw a three-game winning streak end against Dartmouth in their first meeting last season as the Big Green skated away with a 3-2 triumph at Cheel Arena on January 20. Dartmouth also earned a 3-2 victory at Thompson Arena on February 16. The Knights swept the Big Green in 2016-17, winning 4-2 in Potsdam and 6-4 in Hanover, NH. The teams are tied 5-5 over the last 10 games. 
Haralds Egle leads the Knights in scoring against the Big Green with five points, including four assists. Devin Brosseau has scored a team-high two goals in the series. Jake Kielly is 1-2 vs Dartmouth with an .882 SP and a 2.96 GAA.

Scouting Harvard
Harvard is looking to make a move into a top four spot in the ECAC Hockey standings, currently just two points behind the Knights, but the Crimson have played two more league games than the Green and Gold. Harvard stands at 5-5-2 in conference and 8-6-3 overall. The Crimson completed a four-game road trip with a weekend split in Central NY, falling at Cornell 2-0 on Friday before eking out a 2-1 victory at Colgate. Harvard also split on the road the previous weekend, losing 4-2 at Princeton, before earning a big 2-1 win at Quinnipiac on January 12. The Crimson are 3-3-2 at Bright-Landry Hockey Center this season. 

Scouting Dartmouth
Dartmouth is right on Clarkson's heels for a top-four spot in the conference with a 6-4-1 ECAC Hockey mark, just one point behind the Knights, but having played one more league game. The Big Green are 7-9-2 overall entering Friday's game vs St. Lawrence. After shutting out Princeton 5-0 in New Jersey on January 12, Dartmouth blanked Colgate 1-0 this past Friday in Hamilton, NY before falling 5-1 to Cornell in Ithaca on Saturday. The Big Green are 4-4-1 at Thompson Arena. Dartmouth has defeated league powers Harvard (7-6ot) on October 27, Quinnipiac (5-1) on November 3 and Cornell (3-2) on November 30 in Hanover, NH.
