Third Quarter Thwarts Upset Bid for Knights

Oswego, NY – A big deficit in the third quarter ruined any hope of a championship on the opening weekend for the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team as the Golden Knights dropped a 67-50 decision to Wisconsin-Superior Saturday afternoon at the Max Ziel Tournament on the campus of Oswego State.

The Golden Knights moved to 1-1 on the season and will look to regroup on Tuesday when the team opens up the home portion of the schedule by hosting SUNY Potsdam at Alumni Gymnasium.

Clarkson played essentially even with the Yellowjackets for the first two quarters trailing by two in the first (14-12) and by five in the second (15-10) for a seven-point deficit at the break. However, Wisconsin-Superior dropped 28 in the third quarter by making 66.7% of its shots from the floor, including four of its five 3-pointers in the entire contest. In that same time frame, the Knights made just three of their 14 attempts from the field and saw the margin expand from seven to 27. Clarkson did find some offense in the fourth quarter, tossing in 20 points, but the expanse was too much to overcome in just 10 minutes of play.

Junior Hannah Earl scored in double figures for the second straight game, producing a team-best 11 points in the contest. Classmate Emma Buonanno added in 10 points on 5-for-13 shooting. Molly Stewart recorded six points and six rebounds and Rachel Marion had a team-high seven boards.

For the Yellowjackets, Evan Reinertsen scored 15 points and also found her teammates for six assists. Pashia Scott added 11 points and Ellie Leadstrom was a point shy of a double-double thanks to nine points and 10 rebounds. Marissa Ruiz also filled up her stat line with eight points and four rebounds.
