Late Charge by Knights Comes Up Short Versus Lakers, 16-14

Potsdam, NY – Trailing by five goals in the first six minutes of the game, the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team dug itself into a hole in which it could not get out, and the Golden Knights dropped their season-opener to Oswego State, 16-14, Friday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field.

The Golden Knights, now 0-1, will look to get on the winning track next week when they take on SUNY Potsdam and Utica College. The Lakers open the year at 1-0.

Despite being outshot 46-27 in the game, Oswego made the most of its opportunities when the offense got in close, finishing off scoring chances on the interior. Clarkson's first save didn't come until the 9:52 mark of the first half as the Lakers produced 11 goals on their first 11 shots on goal.

At the other end, Clarkson kept Elianna Sanchez busy from the start, peppering the Oswego goalkeeper with 23 shots, including 19 on goal, but the Knights were held in check, especially on free-position opportunities where the Green and Gold were able to convert just once in their 10 tries in the opening period. Down by a score of 10-3 with 17-plus minute expired, the Knights started to solve the Lakers netminder and scored three in the last 12 minutes to build a little momentum to start the second half.

Oswego did expand its lead back to seven about four minutes into the second half, but the Knights chipped away at the deficit and were within three (14-11) by the 13:30 mark thanks to a strong effort from Aubrey Borgesi, who provided an offensive spark in the early minutes of the period. The Lakers were able to counter the run by the Knights with two goals to push the margin back to five, but a furious run late by Clarkson made things interesting. Andrews scored with 2:03 remaining, and Borgesi added another with 1:39 to go, but the Lakers won the ensuing draw and Oswego was able to tick away precious seconds to keep Clarkson from completing the comeback, despite a late goal from Abby Collins.

Clarkson owned a 38-21 edge in shots goal and held a modest 25-20 lead in groundballs. Sanchez won the game for the Lakers with an impressive display in the crease, making 24 saves and adding in six groundballs.

Clarkson's offense was led by Emma Andrews and Sydney Roderick, who each scored four points on three goals and an assist. Borgesi also added in three goals and three groundballs. Abby Collins chipped in a goal and contributed four groundballs, five draws and three caused turnovers. For Oswego, Teresa Shattuck had seven points on five goals and two assists and also added in eight draw controls. Toni Laneve scored five times on just six shots and Kamryn Sherman produced four points with a goal and three assists. Danielle Walker also scooped up five groundballs for the Lakers.
