Knights Pick Up Win Over Rutgers-Newark, 7-6

Auburndale, FL – Steady run scoring in the middle innings gave the Clarkson University Baseball team an early cushion and the Golden Knights held off Rutgers-Newark 7-6 on Tuesday night at the Lake Myrtle Sports Complex.

After no hitters reached in the first three innings for Clarkson, the Knights opened things up with runs in the next four frames. In the top of the fourth, Vincent Granuzzo doubled home Brad Pearson to make it 1-0, but Clarkson would tally twice in the next three innings. Mike Tito led off the fifth with a single and came around on a single to center from Sean Gill. After Gill advanced on a passed ball and a groundout, he trotted home easily on a single to center from Nate Burns to put Clarkson up 3-0.

In the sixth, another leadoff hitter reached when Brad Pearson opened the inning with a single. Granuzzo walked to put runners on first and second, but Pearson was erased on a fielder's choice which allowed Tommy Bianchi to reach base. Tito would deliver another hit to plate Granuzzo, and Bianchi would score on an error to put Clarkson up 5-1.

Two more runs were tacked on in the seventh as Burns led off with a double to center and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Pearson then doubled to center to score Burns and came around himself on a single by Granuzzo. The Scarlet Raiders responded with five in the bottom half of the seventh, started by an RBI double from Luke Magliaro and a two-run double from Kevin Tamsula. Although Rutgers-Newark would threaten with runners in scoring position in both the eighth and ninth inning, Jake Scurrah wiggled out of the jams to hold off the late charge of the Raiders.

Kyle Locklear struck out five and allowed only a single hit in 4.2 innings for Clarkson, while Scurrah gained the win, giving up four hits while striking out six in 4.1 innings of work. While the duo held Rutgers-Newark to five hits, they did give up 14 walks. Burns, Pearson, Granuzzo and Tito each produced two hits for Clarkson.
