CU Offense Awakens in Late Run to Win Over RPI, 13-11

Potsdam, NY – After 47 minutes of relative quiet on offense and a five-goal deficit, the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team rolled off seven straight goals in the final 13 minutes to claim a wild 13-11 victory over Rensselaer in the Liberty League Playoffs' First Round Tuesday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field.

The Golden Knights improved to 12-6 overall with their first ever post-season win, while the Engineers saw their season come to an end with a mark of 8-6. Clarkson will face Ithaca College in the Liberty League semifinals at 2:30 pm on Saturday, with the game being hosted in Geneva, NY by William Smith College.

Sydney Roderick scored at 22:34 to pull Clarkson within one (7-6), but the Engineers scored four straight, including back-to-back player-up goals by Erin Goodwin midway through the half, to push the lead to 11-6 with 13:05 to go. For the final 13 minutes, however, Clarkson dominated play, getting most of the draws and pressing the offensive tempo to get back in the game. Mia Petrone scored at 12:43 to give the Knights some life, but two scores from Sydney Roderick at 10:53 and 7:10 gave the team real hope. When Marisa Clark scored and emphatically dropped her stick at the 6:39 mark, the momentum had clearly shifted Clarkson's way.

RPI appeared to have a chance to turn things around when Aleena Milinski made a save on a free-position shot by Mia Petrone, but a turnover allowed Clarkson to get a fast break as Aubrey Borgesi scooped up the groundball and found Roderick on the other side of the crease at 5:54 to tie the game. Just a little over a minute later, Roderick scored on a side-winding shot to give the Knights the lead and an insurance goal from Katie Sergeant came at the 2:42 mark for Clarkson.

The last 13 minutes of the game saw the Engineers constantly on their heels as they turned the ball over three times and won only one draw. RPI finally had a chance late to get on offense, but one shot went wide and one final attempt was saved by Carolynn Pechmann and Clarkson held on to the ball to run out the clock.

The final 13 minutes were in stark contrast to the first 47, as Clarkson struggled to solve Milinski for the second time this year. In the first meeting, Milinski made 16 saves on 24 shots against the Knights, and she was on her way to that type of percentage again with 12 saves on Clarkson's first 18 shots on goal. However, the Knights finally solved the ace goalkeeper, scoring seven times on their final 12 attempts at the cage.

Usually more of a facilitator than scorer, Roderick took over on offense, scoring seven points with six goals and one assist. Marisa Clark played a key role in keeping the Knights in contention in the first half, scoring two of her three goals in the first half. Borgesi added a goal and an assist and Petrone, Jaid Baytos and Sergeant each scored once. Baytos also added six draw controls while Abby Collins produced four draws, three groundballs and five caused turnovers. Stephanie Scaia and Aubrey Borgesi also had three groundballs each.

Roderick's offensive outburst pushed her season total to 76 points, the second-most in program history and a new mark for first-year players, passing the 72 produced by Christine Wright in 2013. Her one assist also allowed her to break Clarkson's single-season mark for assists (45), a mark that was also set by Wright in 2016.

For RPI, Liz Brady matched Roderick's effort with seven points, scoring three times and assisting on four goals for seven points. Maddy Aslansan added in four points on three goals and an assist while Abbey Salvon and Erin Goodwin each scored twice. Goodwin recorded five draws and Nora Molino led the team with four caused turnovers. Milinski finished with 17 saves.

Clarkson held advantages in shots (40-17), shots on goal (30-13), groundballs (17-12), and draws (16-10).
