Flaherty Goal in 77th Minute Gives Knights 2-1 Win

Potsdam, NY – A late goal from Ally Flaherty proved to be the game-winning goal for the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team, as the Golden Knights remained unbeaten at home with a 2-1 victory over Utica College Saturday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field.

The Golden Knights moved to 5-1-1 overall while the Pioneers suffered their first loss of 2019, dropping to 5-1-0. Clarkson opens up league play on Wednesday when the team hosts Liberty League foes Skidmore College.

Through the first five games of 2019, Utica's offense was fluid with 14 goals, but Clarkson thoroughly dominated play on Saturday, outshooting the Pioneers 19-4, including an 11-1 clip in the opening 45 minutes. Clarkson was able to only put one of those 11 shots past Utica goalkeeper Allison Wagner, however, when senior Danielle Martin used a direct kick to find the head of classmate Camryn Careccia off a cross at 42:29.

The second half played slightly more even, but the Knights picked up a key goal in the 77th minute when Ally Flaherty converted off a pass from Gabrielle Mullane, with Flaherty outmaneuvering the goalkeeper and defense inside the penalty area. The score could have been a back-breaker for the Pioneers, who had struggled offensively against the Knights' defense, but Utica responded with a goal of its own just 50 seconds later when Kierra Caissey beat Clarkson keeper Elyse Green on the right side.

The Utica goal could have swung momentum the Pioneers' way, but Clarkson controlled the play down the stretch, keeping Utica without a shot and maintaining possession deep in the Pioneers' defensive end for the final 12 minutes.

Green finished with three saves to pick up the victory while Wagner collected 10 saves on a busy day in the Utica frame. Clarkson held a 19-4 edge in shots and 5-1 advantage in corner kick opportunities.
