Auburndale, FL – Some late rallies by each of the Clarkson University Baseball team's opponents sent the Golden Knights to a pair of defeats on Saturday, as the Green and Gold dropped a 7-6 decision to Concordia University Chicago and then fell 9-6 to Nichols College at the Lake Myrtle Complex.

In the first game, the Knights got on the scoreboard first, leading off the bottom of the second inning with a solo home run to right. An inning later, the Knights put runners on the corners when Zachary Carpin walked, Joe Stockman singled, and Caleb Doyle singled, though Stockman was erased on the bases. Kyle Locklear grounded out to short, allowing Carpin to scamper home, putting Clarkson up 2-0.

The Cougars responded with a run in the top of the fourth on a solo homer by Matt Fauth, but the Knights regained a two-run advantage in the bottom of the fifth as Michael Tito singled home Doyle on a two-out hit. That advantage would not last long as Concordia tossed up three runs in the top of the sixth, doing all of its damage with two outs.

Clarkson came back with a pair of extra-base hits at the start of the bottom of the sixth. Ernesto Ruiz-Sierra doubled to left on a full count and one pitch later Carpin homered to left, putting the Knights back up, 5-4. That lead was also short-lived for Clarkson, though, as Concordia reclaimed the lead on an RBI-single from Caleb Anderson and a double by Cooper Hynes in the eighth, and gained another unearned run in the ninth. Clarkson tried to rally in the ninth with back-to-back singles by Locklear and Tito, and after a fly out, the duo performed a double-steal, with Locklear scoring on a throwing error. However, Tito was stranded at second after another fly ball and strikeout ended the game.

Tito finished 2-for-2 and also reached on a walk, while Carpin and Brouillette each added a pair of hits. Mark Connor allowed six hits over 6.1 innings of work with a pair of strikeouts. Eric Corhouse took the loss, though he struck out three hitters in 1.2 innings. Griffin Racey closed out the game by tossing the final frame.

In game two, it appeared as if starting pitcher Glenn Stever might get chased in the first inning as Nichols produced five hits and three runs in the first inning. However, the junior pitcher settled in and allowed just five more hits and two more runs in his remaining four innings of work.

Clarkson did its part of supporting the starting pitcher by climbing back into the game with a run in the bottom of the first and then two more in the second. Tito singled and moved to second on a wild pitch, advancing to third on a Joe Pagano single. The junior then scampered home on a sacrifice fly by Mike Nee. In the second, it was Tito that played the part of run-producer, scoring both Sean Gill and Nate Burns, each of whom had reached on walks to open the inning.

Nichols scored two more in top of the fourth, but the Knights again responded with two in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game a second time. One of the runs for Clarkson came home on an error and Pagano plated the second with a single up the middle for a 5-5 score. An inning later each team scored another run to keep the game tied through six frames, but the Bison maneuvered around strikeouts in the late innings, scoring one in the eighth and two in the ninth to take the game.

Tito finished 3-for-5 in the game, scoring twice and driving in a pair and Pagano was 2-for-5 at the plate, but no other Clarkson players produced more than one hit, though Kent Wilson was 1-for-2 and also reached on a pair of walks. Stever worked through some early troubles to put up a respectable pitching line. Jake Phillips came on in relief in the sixth and ended up with the loss, though he did strike out seven over four innings.
