Clarkson Falls 12-8 Versus 23rd-Ranked Geneseo

Potsdam, NY – Over the final five minutes SUNY Geneseo scored four times to turn a tie game into a 12-8 defeat for the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team in the Golden Knights' home opener on Saturday afternoon.

Clarkson fell to 2-1 on the year with the loss and will take on 20th-ranked Brockport on Wednesday. Geneseo, 23rd in the country in the latest poll, improved to 4-1 on the year.

Geneseo scored just 21 seconds into the game and then picked up a second goal less than three minutes later to take an early 2-0 lead, but the two teams traded goals over the next 15 minutes as Clarkson was down by two, 4-2. The Golden Knights pulled to within one late in the half on a score from Aubrey Borgesi at 3:09, and the Knights tied the game at 4-4 less than 30 seconds into the second half when Sydney Roderick found Abby Collins in front at 29:34.

The game remained tight for the next 15 minutes as neither team could ever muster more than a one goal lead. Clarkson led by one (7-6) when Borgesi scored a minute into an extra-attacker chance at 20:06, but Geneseo responded with two goals, though they were nine minutes apart, to take an 8-6 lead at 7:03. Roderick wove through traffic at 5:15 to tie the game 8-8 and it appeared as if the game might go down to the wire.

Geneseo scored just 14 seconds after Roderick's goal to regain the lead, and Megan Henderson picked up another score at 4:07 for a two-goal advantage for the visitors. Clarkson won the ensuing draw and tried to set up its offense, but a minute later Geneseo picked up a loose ball in front of the goal and was successful with its clear. Over the next two minutes, Clarkson did regain possession but was unable to get a shot off. Geneseo scored an insurance goal with 28 seconds left when Megan Henderson tallied and Geneseo won the ensuing draw, adding another goal in the final second when everyone but the players who combined on it were letting the final clicks go off the clock.

Roderick scored five points on three goals and two assists while Borgesi scored three times. Lexi Smith added two points with a goal and one assist. Katie Sergeant caused five turnovers and contributed four groundballs and Sarah Duhaime notched four groundballs while causing three turnovers. Emily Fischer was solid in net, making 15 saves and also contributing six groundballs.

For Geneseo, Tessa Doody scored six points on three goals and three assists while Megan Henderson was busy with three goals, three groundballs, three caused turnovers and seven draws.
