Werdine Produced Career-Best 19 Kills in Sweep of SLU

Potsdam, NY – Junior Kristin Werdine recorded a career-high 19 kills and hit an efficient .378 despite numerous attacks from the back row to help lead the Clarkson University Volleyball team to a three-set sweep of St. Lawrence University, 25-16, 25-18, 25-21, in Liberty League action Friday night at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights improved to 9-6 overall and 1-2 in conference games while St. Lawrence fell to 6-8 and 0-3 in league contests. Clarkson will hit the road Saturday to take on Endicott College and Middlebury College in Vermont.

St. Lawrence jumped out in front in the early going but Clarkson rallied to score seven points in a stretch of nine serves. It took some time for the Knights to create some separation, leading by four on a few occasions (18-14), but down the stretch the Green and Gold got a pair of kills from Werdine and an ace to close out the first set.

The second set was also close in the early going and Clarkson held just a four-point advantage near the midway point (14-10). A kill from Werdine sparked and another proved a bookend of a 7-2 run that put the Knights up big late, 21-12, and Clarkson cruised from there.

Set three was more of a back and forth affair as St. Lawrence held a small lead (10-6), forcing the Knights to call for time. Clarkson came back to tie the set at 14, but St. Lawrence would hold on and gain a three-point advantage at 19-16 with three straight points, making Clarkson call for time once again. Out of that break, Clarkson found another groove as Allyson Treichel notched a pair of kills to tie the set at 19, and then picked up another to tie the set 20-20. Clarkson would never trail again from that point, as Treichel, Olivia Freer, and Gillian Kurtic scored kills to close out the set.

Werdine had a double-double with 19 kills and 10 digs and Allyson Treichel produced nine kills. Both Gillian Kurtic and Sara Galante also had six kills for the Knights. Isabelle Crow directed the offense with 37 assists as Clarkson hit .244 for the match. Emma Baxter picked up 26 digs while both Crow and Abigail Spector added 15 digs. Kurtic also had three block assists and four aces in the match.

Natalie Piper led the Saints with 12 kills, but no other players for the Saints was close to double figures. Dorian Funk contributed 15 assists. Reagan Collier-Hogan was busy in the back row with 23 digs, while Piper (12), Annika Kreppein (11) and Funk (10) also each registered double figures.
