Yellowjackets Take Off in Second Half to Stymie Golden Knights, 85-55

Potsdam, NY – All season long the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team has seemingly sunk 3-pointers at will, but Sunday afternoon saw the Golden Knights make just six of their 28 attempts from beyond the arc as Rochester used a big second-half run to pull away for an 85-55 win.

The Golden Knights fell to 2-3 on the season while Rochester evened its mark at 2-2. Clarkson will play St. Lawrence University on Tuesday evening and will then face Norwich University twice over the weekend.

Separated by just three points at the break, Clarkson scored on its first possession of the second half, but then made just one of its next 15 shots as the Yellowjackets went on a 31-3 run over the course of 10-plus minutes to put the game out of reach.

Both teams struggled out of the gate with only a lone free throw accounting for any points in the first two minutes. The teams swapped leads and occasionally tied in the first half as the game remained close. Rochester edged out to an eight-point lead (25-17) when Ryan Algier converted inside and then hit a free throw midway through the half, but back-to-back 3-pointers from Blake Gearhart and Garrett Delaney put the margin at three (27-24) with 6:40 remaining. The gap wavered slightly for the rest of the half, but eventually settled back at three when Gearhart hit a pair of free throws in the final minute.

Rochester didn't miss much at the start of the second half, hitting four 3-pointers during its big run around numerous plays on the interior. The Yellowjackets forwards proved a bit too much for the comparatively undersized Knights to handle on the interior, especially with Clarkson's long-distance shots not falling.

Rochester shot 19-for-31 in the second half, including a 7-for-15 effort from beyond the 3-point arc. After a 2-for-16 start to the second period, the Knights closed out the game with an 8-for-17 effort from the floor.

Sophomore Blake Gearhart matched his collegiate-high with 17 points for the Knights, shooting 6-for-11 from the floor. Chris Hulbert also tossed in eight points and grabbed four rebounds. Clarkson's bench produced 32 of the team's 56 points in the game.

For Rochester, Ryan Algier was 10-for-12 from the floor in just 21 minutes to produce a double-double, scoring 22 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Forward CJ Amsellem and Brian Amabilino Perez each had 14 points and five rebounds. Rochester limited Clarkson's second-half chances by out rebounding the nights 25-13 in the final 20 minutes.
