Knights Walk Off In Game Two for Split Versus Rochester

Potsdam, NY – Sophomore Colby Brouillette singled up the middle in the bottom of the ninth to give the Clarkson University Baseball team a walk-off single in game two to help the Golden Knights salvage a split against University of Rochester on Saturday, with the Yellowjackets taking the opener 8-2 and the Knights winning the night cap 9-8.

The Golden Knights moved to 9-9 on the season and 4-2 in the Liberty League, while the Yellowjackets suffered their first conference loss to go to 5-1 in league games and 11-4 overall. The two teams will face one another again on Sunday in Rochester.

In the opener, Rochester's offense was on full display as the Yellowjackets pounded out 16 hits in seven innings, pushing at least one run across in five of the seven innings. Rochester had one in the first, one in the second, and one in the third, but Clarkson was able to keep the game close by scoring a single run in the second and another run in the fourth. In the bottom of the second, Zachary Carpin led off with a double to right-center and moved to third on a single by Michael Tito. Caleb Doyle then doubled into left to plate Carpin to make the score 2-1. After Rochester responded in the third, the Knights picked up another run in the bottom of the fourth as Carpin doubled again, moved to third on a ground out and then scored on an error.

That was all Clarkson could muster in the first game, and the Yellowjackets piled on in the sixth and seventh, scoring two thanks to a double and sac fly in the sixth and putting three on the board with a two-run single from Jackson Reed and an RBI-double by Brian McKinsey.

Carpin was the lone hitter for the Knights with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with two runs and two doubles. Jon Turk got the win for Rochester, striking out seven and allowing just five hits in seven frames.

In game two, Rochester was up early again with a run in the first thanks to a sac fly by Harper Sy. The Yellowjackets then scored four in the second, with the big blow coming on a two-run triple by Aaron Whitley. What looked like it could be a rout early turned in the bottom of the second as Clarkson scored six in the frame, including five with two outs. Michael Mieczkowski opened the inning by reaching on an error, and he came all the way around on a Colby Brouillette double. After two outs were recorded, Caleb Doyle singled in Brouillette to make it 5-2. Kent Wilson then followed with a blast to right-center to get the Knights within one, but Clarkson wasn't finished, as Michael Tito doubled down the right field line and then came home when Carpin homered to left, putting the Knights up 6-5.

Clarkson scored again in the bottom of the third when Mieczkowski walked and advanced around the bases on a single, passed ball, and fielder's choice to give the Green and Gold an 7-5 lead. A two-run single by Steve Pickering tied the game in the top of the fifth, but Clarkson rallied for a run in the bottom of the inning when Mieczkowski reached on an infield single and scored on a double to left-center by Brouillette.

The offenses were relatively quiet for the next few innings, but Rochester tied the game in the top of the ninth. Jackson Reed singled to start the inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Only a leaping grab by Carpin kept Rochester from scoring one batter later, but after a walk, Harper Sy came through with a two-out single to center to tie the game at 8-8.  In the bottom of the inning, though, Clarkson was able to come through as Jonathan Irons reached on a one-out single and then advanced on a wild pitch. With two outs, Brouillette singled hard up the middle, and the Yellowjackets might have had a play at the plate, but the Jackson Reed's dive to keep the ball in the infield ended up helping the Knights as the ball ticked off his glove. That light touch slowed the ball down enough to allow Irons to score.

Griffin Tubbs ended up as the winning pitcher, throwing the final two innings for Clarkson. Brouillette was 5-for-5 with two doubles and three runs batted in and Tito went 2-for-5 at the plate. For Rochester, Whitley was 4-for-5 with two runs and two more driven in, and Pickering went 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI.
