Knights Rack Up 25 Runs In Doubleheader Sweep of Bard College

Annandale-on-Hudson, NY – Scoring runs in bunches with two outs, the Clarkson University Baseball team took hit well in pressure situations on Saturday and swept a non-league doubleheader against Bard College, 14-4 and 11-2, at Honey Field.

The Golden Knights drew back to even for the first time this year, improving to 5-5 on the season with the sweep. Bard dropped to 1-3. Clarkson opens Liberty League play next weekend when the team faces St. Lawrence University in a four-game set.

Clarkson had an opportunity in the top of the first after a leadoff double from Kent Wilson, but couldn't convert, while the Raptors put a runner on third when Robert Arciola walked and stole both second and third, but it wasn't until the fourth that either team pushed a run across the plate. In the top of the fourth, Mike Mieczkowski reached on a two-out single to right-center and then came around on a double by Jonathan Irons to put the Knights up 1-0. Colby Brouillette followed with a single up the middle to plate Irons, giving Clarkson a 2-0 edge.

In the fifth, Caleb Doyle singled to left and Wilson followed with a single up the middle. With two outs, Mike Nee reached on an error to load the bases, and Clarkson took advantage of the extra out as Mieczkowski plated a pair with a single to left. Bard scored twice in the bottom half of the inning when Spencer Checkoway battled through an eight-pitch at bat to homer to center field, making the score 4-2 through five frames.

Clarkson put the game away in the sixth and then made the game a blowout in the seventh. In the top of the sixth, four errors by Bard helped the Knights score four times, with the lone RBI of the inning coming from Mieczkowski when he singled home Michael Tito to make it 8-2. The seventh saw Clarkson put in its reserves, but the team continued to score. John Young doubled in Joe Stockman and Zachary Carpin, who had both reached on bases on balls, and Wilson then singled home Young. Mike Nee doubled in both Wilson and Tito to make the score 13-2, and Nee later scored on a wild pitch to complete the Golden Knights' offense for the day.

Wilson finished 3-for-5 with three runs scored and Mieczkowski also went 3-for-5 with three RBI. Mike Nee drove in a pair and was 2-for-4, Brouillette was 2-for-3, and Tito went 2-for-5 with a pair of runs scored. Kyle Locklear earned his first win of the season, allowing four hits and four walks with eight strikeouts in five innings of work. Jake Phillips tossed the final two innings to close out the game, striking out three.

The second game saw the Knights continue their offensive streak with three runs in the top of the first, the third straight inning in which they put up a crooked number. Wilson led off with a single through the left side and moved to third while the next two hitters were retired. However, Mieczkowski singled home Wilson and then came around on a double by Jonathan Irons for the second run of the inning. Tito then reached on an error, allowing Irons to score.

In the fourth, Clarkson added a single run without the benefit of a hit as Caleb Doyle led off with a walk, moved to second on a balk, reached third on a wild pitch, and then completed the trip around the bases by scampering home on a passed ball. Bard got on the board in the bottom of the sixth when Brandon Kaminsky singled to right-center to score Jared Toby.

That would be as close as Bard would get, though, with Clarkson pushing four runs across in the seventh and three more in the eighth. With two outs in the seventh, Irons walked, Tito reached on an error, and Stockman singled to load the bases. Kyle Locklear then sent Irons and Tito home with a single to left-center, Stockman scored on a passed ball, and a hit from Doyle allowed Locklear to score. In the eighth, five straight hitters reached via walks with Tito and Stockman each recording an RBI thanks to the bases being loaded when they drew their base on balls. Locklear grounded out to allow another run to score.

The bottom of the lineup did plenty of damage in game two for Clarkson with Stockman, Locklear, and Doyle combining to go 6-for-12 at the plate with five runs batted in and three more scored. Mieczkowski and Wilson joined that trio in having multi-hit games. Glenn Stever picked up the win for Clarkson, striking out five of five frames. Griffin Tubbs gave up one run in three innings of relief and Nicholas Hofacker closed out the game, giving up a single run in the ninth.
