Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Knights Fall in Five in Liberty League Championship Match at Ithaca

Ithaca, NY – Just one week after losing in straight sets to top-seeded Ithaca, the Clarkson University Volleyball team gave the Bombers all they could handle in the Liberty League Championship match, but the Golden Knights could not topple Ithaca, falling in five sets 17-25, 25-18, 19-25, 25-23, 15-12 on Saturday afternoon.

Clarkson saw its record fall to 16-11 for the year, while the 25th-ranked Bombers improved to 24-4. It was the fourth time that the Knights fell in five sets during 2022, and the win for Ithaca marked their first-ever post-season victory over Clarkson.

The Golden Knights held Ithaca's strong offense in check in the first set, holding the Bombers to just a .027 hitting percentage (10-9-37), while hitting .270 with 14 kills themselves. Ithaca held an early lead (10-8), but the Knights went on a 7-0 run with three kills from Allyson Treichel. The Bombers briefly got back within two (15-13), but again Clarkson scored four straight to build a six-point lead, and the Green and Gold finished with an eight-point win in the first set.

Set number two was the reverse of the first as the Knights had the early advantage (8-5) only to see Ithaca go on a 9-1 run with kills from Alexandra Montgomery sparking the rally. Clarkson would briefly cut the deficit to three a couple of times late in the set, but Ithaca went on a 4-0 run to end the game with two aces from Aleka Darko.

Clarkson never trailed in the third set, building an 11-4 lead with two late kills from Natalie Peacock ending that strong burst. That early run was enough for the Knights, as Clarkson held at least a four-point advantage the rest of the way, capping off the game with kills from Sara Galante and Kristin Werdine.

The fourth set was a back-and-forth affair in the early going as the teams tied six times in the first 12 points before Ithaca went on a 6-1 run to form a buffer. Clarkson trailed by as many as eight points in the set (21-13) before mounting a comeback. The Knights were within four (22-18) only to see Ithaca pick up two quick points for a set-point. However, Clarkson's run was not finished, as the Knights took advantage of Bomber miscues and a Treichel kill to make it 24-23. However, a late attack error kept the game from going extra points.

Much like the fourth set, the two teams traded points at the start of the fifth set sprint to 15, with neither team wanting to recover from a deficit. The Knights were the first team to build a two-point lead as Clarkson scored three straight with kills from Kristen Werdine, Sara Galante, and Olivia Freer putting the Green and Gold up 7-5 and forcing the Bombers to take a timeout before the mid-game switching of sides. With the Knights up 8-6 after the switch, Ithaca scored four straight points thanks to a pair of kills from Leila Chipepo, but a timeout by Clarkson ended the run as play returned with a service error. Unlike the previous sets, neither team could get the advantage they wanted, as the teams tied at 10, 11, and 12 points. That changed with back-to-back kills from Aleka Darko and Camryn O'Leary, as the Bombers got their first match point, and finished off the match with a point on a Clarkson error.

Kristin Werdine finished with 19 kills and 17 digs, and Allyson Treichel added 13 kills six total blocks. Olivia Freer also had 12 kills and hit .345 in the match (12-2-29). Isabelle Crow ran the offense with 43 assists, while the back row of Emma Baxter (25 digs), Abigail Spector (14 digs), and Alexandra Bergantz (10 digs) reach reached double figures in digs.

For Ithaca, Camryn O'Leary, Aleka Darko, and Leila Chipepo each had 12 kills, with Darko leading the trio in hitting percentage at .308. Peyton Miller and Maddie Cox split setting duties and each had 23 assists, and Julia Costa led the defense with 22 digs.
