Hagberg and Barnum Combine for 12 Goals in Knights Win at Canton

Canton, NY – Grace Hagberg and Madelynn Barnum each scored six goals as the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team coasted to a 17-3 win over SUNY Canton on Thursday afternoon.

The Golden Knights improved to 3-0 on the season while Canton suffered its first loss to drop to 3-1. Clarkson had a game scheduled against Utica for Saturday, but the game was postponed due to weather concerns, so the Knights next contest will be in Florida against Albright College.

In a sign of things to come, Grace Hagberg won the opening draw, sprinted down the field towards the Canton goal, dodged defenders along the way and came away with a goal just nine seconds into the contest.  Hagberg would be particularly busy in the first quarter, scoring four of the Golden Knights' six goals, with Mia Petrone earning three assists. Through the first 15 minutes, Clarkson led by six and had outshot Canton 14-0.

Hagberg scored in the first minute of the second quarter as well, but the period would belong more to Madelynn Barnum this time around. Barnum scored four times in a stretch of four and a half minutes, with her final tally of the half forcing a running clock. Hagberg would add one more score midway through the period to put the Knights up 12-1 at the half.

Canton threatened to get the clock to stop when it scored the first goal of the second half to make it 12-2, but Madelyn Barnum scored on a free-position shot at the 11:21 mark to return the lead to 11 goals. Mia Petrone and Barnum scored a few minutes later to put the margin at 15-2 through three periods.

The fourth quarter was a slower scoring pace for the Knights as the team was content to run the clock, but Julia Patterson was able to work in her first collegiate goal midway through the period on a free-position shot. Patterson added another goal in the final minutes for the final tally.

Clarkson finished with a 35-11 edge in shots, including a 25-8 lead in shots on goal, while also winning the groundball battle 23-17. Hagberg finished with six goals and seven draw controls and Barnum scored six times to go along with three caused turnovers. Petrone also added in five points on two goals and three assists, Sofie Mangino had three points with a goal and two assists, and Julia Patterson tossed in two late goals. Chrissy Benedict led the team with four groundballs, one more than Mangino, who also had two caused turnovers. Natalie Farnett also forced three Canton turnovers. In the Clarkson crease, Sydney Christansen made one save and Laura Wing stopped four shots over the final 20 minutes.
