Clarkson Opens Up 2022 By Doubling Up Oswego, 18-9

Potsdam, NY – Over the final 19 minutes of the first half, the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team went on a 9-1 run to turn a one-goal game into a nine-goal advantage at the break as the Golden Knights opened up the 2022 season with an 18-9 victory over Oswego State at Hantz Field.

The Green and Gold are now 1-0 and will take on a second straight SUNYAC opponent this weekend when they travel to face SUNY Cortland. Oswego State dropped to 0-2 on the year.

Clarkson never trailed on Wednesday, scoring a player-up goal in the first minute when Hailey Millington found the back of the net. Clarkson had a modest 3-2 lead through 10 minutes after Julia Quirk scored for Oswego State, but Sydney Roderick and Mia Petrone each scored in the final four minutes to put the Knights up 5-2.

That turned out to just be the start of a solid offensive stretch for the Knights. Sydney Roderick scored twice in the first three minutes of the second quarter and Julia Lavarnway followed with two more to give the Knights a 9-2 advantage. Oswego briefly stopped the run with a player-up goal, but the Knights responded with three more goals in the final five minutes to take an 12-3 advantage into the locker room.

The Knights kept the clock running with another goal from Lavarnway at the start of the third, putting Clarkson up by 10, but Oswego seemed to have an answer for the Knights any time that it appeared Clarkson would run away with the game. The Lakers and Knights exchanged goals for much of the third and the fourth, and two late goals for Oswego kept the clock from running, but Clarkson was able to cruise to the win.

Lavarnway finished with six points on five goals and an assist and Hailey Millington chipped in four goals. Sydney Roderick also had three goals and an assist for four points while Grace Hagberg chipped in three goals. Madelynn Barnum didn't record any points, but nevertheless made her presence felt in the midfield with five draws and seven groundballs in the game. Defensively, Natalie Farnett caused three turnovers and added a pair of groundballs, while Megan McCoskey notched three groundballs and caused two turnovers. Sydney Christiansen made five saves in 59 minutes of action for the Knights.

For Oswego, Sela Wiley was busy at midfield, earning nine draws, and also scored four goals. Julia Quirk also scored twice, added two groundballs, and caused three turnovers. Maria Buscaglia snagged three groundballs as well. Sarah Kamide stopped 10 shots in the Oswego crease.
