Knights Upended by Ithaca, 18-8

Potsdam, NY – A run of eight straight goals from the end of the first to the middle of the second put the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team in a hole early and the Golden Knights could never recover, suffering an 18-8 defeat versus fourth-ranked Ithaca College on Saturday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights saw their record fall to 6-2 overall and 1-2 in Liberty League games, while Ithaca moved to 6-1 and 2-1. Clarkson begins a three-game streak of road games next Saturday, beginning with Vassar College.

The two teams were close for the first portion of the opening period, trading goals for the first eight minutes. Ithaca opened with a free position score from Megan Motkowski, but Abigail Johnson quickly responded with Clarkson up a player due to a yellow card. The Bombers again regained the lead two minutes later but Madelynn Barnum tallied less than 75 seconds later to knot the game up 2-2. However, Ithaca ended the exchange by scoring six times to close out the quarter, including three in the final two minutes from Alexa Ritchie, to take an 8-2 lead.

Clarkson's defense clamped down in the second period, but still had some trouble scoring itself. Sydney Roderick ended a near-20 minute scoreless drought at 4:19 to draw the Knights back within seven, 10-3, and then scored again with 2:29 to go, but the margin remained seven at the break.

Roderick continued to lead the Clarkson offense in the third quarter, scoring a pair of goals midway through the period, but Ithaca continued to extend their advantage, eventually getting to the 10-goal mark near the conclusion of the period. At the start of the fourth, Clarkson stopped the running clock when Barnum scored at 11:57, only to see Ithaca tally just 26 seconds later to keep it moving once again. A goal from Chrissy Benedict at 4:25 halted the running clock for a second time, but by that point it was far too late for a comeback.

Ithaca finished with a 42-20 edge in shots and a 34-16 lead in shots on goal. The two teams were even in groundballs (17-17), but Ithaca won 23 of the 29 draws.

Sydney Roderick scored five points with four goals and an assist and Madelynn Barnum added three points on two goals and an assist while also adding three draw controls and three groundballs. Rylee Ganter also picked up three groundballs while Kim Parker caused two turnovers and added two groundballs. Sydney Christiansen stopped 16 shots in the Clarkson crease.

Maizy Veitch led the Bombers on offense with seven points thanks to five goals and two assists, while Alexa Ritchie found the back of the net six times. Caroline Wise also added three points and secured 18 draw controls and four groundballs. Lexi Held made seven saves for Ithaca, while Kayla Howley came on late to make one stop.
