Vaccaro Homers Twice as Knights Sweep SUNY Canton

Potsdam, NY – Senior Sarah Vaccaro homered twice and Olivia Zoeller and Emily McBath combined on a five-inning no-hitter as the Clarkson University Softball team swept a doubleheader from SUNY Canton, winning the first 4-3 and claiming the nightcap 8-0 on Saturday afternoon at Scott Field.

The Golden Knights saw their record advance to 5-7 on the year while Canton remained winless at 0-14. Clarkson looks to continue its winning streak on Wednesday when the team heads across town to take on SUNY Potsdam.

In the opener, Canton got on the scoreboard first with an unearned run in the top half of the opening inning, but the Knights responded with two runs as Sarah Vaccaro deposited one over the left field wall in the bottom half of the frame, placing Bridget Twaits in the process. Clarkson then tacked on another run in the bottom of the second as Olivia Zoeller singled in Twaits, who had reached on an error and then advanced to second on the same play.

Canton picked up a run in the fourth, again on a Clarkson miscue, but the Knights got the run back in fifth. With two outs, Maddie Brink singled and was replaced by pinch-runner Katy Aldous. Aldous promptly stole second and then came in on a hit from Zoey Kovach, in what turned out to be the game-winning RBI. Canton had a rally going in the top of the seventh as the first two runners reached and then moved into scoring position after a wild pitch. However, Riley Page was able to wiggle out of the jam with three straight outs, allowing only one run to score, to earn the save.

Devin Fitzpatrick picked up the win, striking out five and allowing a pair of unearned runs in five innings, while Page got the save, striking out two in two frames. Kovach was 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Twaits scored two runs.

Game two had less suspense, as Clarkson put up crooked numbers in the first two innings. Clarkson got on the board early on a two-run single from Vaccaro, scoring Zoeller and Tatum Morris, and then Vaccaro came around on an RBI ground-out from Kovach. The following inning, a double steal from Zoeller and Emma Sabourin pushed the fourth Clarkson run across, and Tatum Morris then doubled off the wall in left to score Zoeller. Morris didn't spend much time on the bases as Vaccaro blasted a liner to left-center for her second home run of the day giving the Knights a 7-0 advantage. Clarkson picked up its eighth run on an RBI groundout from Morris.

Olivia Zoeller tossed the first four innings and allowed just one baserunner with a walk and struck out five. Emily McBath ended the game with a scoreless and hitless fifth inning, recording two groundouts and a strikeout.

Zoeller was 3-for-3 with a triple and three runs scored, Morris was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two more driven in, and Vaccaro plated four with her two hits while also scoring twice.
