Petrone Scores Game-Winner in Final Minute as Knights Overcome Skidmore, 15-14

Saratoga Springs, NY – Trailing since the opening minute of the contest, the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse mounted a furious comeback in the final four minutes to claim a 15-14 Liberty League win over Skidmore College on Friday afternoon.

The Golden Knights improved to 8-2 overall and 3-2 in conference games, while the Thoroughbreds fell to 2-7 and 2-3 in league contests. Clarkson looks to carry the momentum from Friday's win into the second league game of the weekend when the team takes on Union College on Saturday afternoon.

Down by three after a Lily Schwartzman goal with just under seven minutes to go, Clarkson appeared to be in trouble of suffering its third league loss of the year. However, Mia Petrone and Sydney Roderick found one another twice in a stretch of just 10 seconds near the four-minute mark to close the gap to one. For the first goal of the streak, Roderick found Petrone in close, and the latter's duck under a defender put the score at 14-12 with 4:11 remaining. On the following draw, Petrone picked up possession quickly and found Roderick ahead of the field where the senior was able to find the back of the net at 4:03. Clarkson gained possession on the next draw as well, ending in a goal from Madelynn Barnum as she dodged her way through traffic to tie the contest at 3:29.

Clarkson took the lead for the first time all day in the final minute, when Petrone was awarded a free position attempt with less than 40 seconds remaining, and the senior converted despite being surrounded on all sides by Skidmore defenders. Clarkson won the following draw as well and was able to play keep-away for the remaining seconds of regulation.

The start of the game was not as impressive for the Knights, as Skidmore rolled out to an 8-4 lead in the first 15 minutes. For the final 45 minutes, however, Clarkson's defense tightened up, giving up two goals in each quarter the rest of the way while chipping away at the deficit.

Petrone enjoyed the best game of her collegiate career on Friday, scoring seven points with six goals and an assist to go along with nine draw controls and two caused turnovers. Barnum added five goals and four draws and Roderick also had five points with a goal and four assists. Freshman Chrissy Benedict also chipped in two goals for the Knights. Anna Patterson won three groundballs and caused a turnover and Rylee Ganter caused three turnovers with two groundballs.

For Skidmore, Gabriella Modesti had six points on three goals and three assists and Maddy Marr had two goals and two assists. Ella Harris gained possession with nine draw controls.

Liv Kazanjian was strong in the first half for Skidmore, and finished with 15 saves, while Clarkson's Sydney Christiansen stopped five shots and Laura Wing made one save. The Golden Knights finished with a 35-27 edge in shots, including a 30-20 lead in shots on goal, and won 20 of 33 draws while also leading in groundballs 15-13.
