Clarkson Volleyball Comes Up Short in Two Matches Versus Top-10 Ranked Opponents

Holland, MI – Facing on two top 10 teams, the Clarkson University Volleyball team took seventh-ranked Northwestern (MN) to the brink in a five-set match (25-18, 26-28, 25-14, 23-25, 15-8) and later fell to fifth-rated Calvin in three (25-14, 25-11, 25-21) as the Golden Knights closed out their trip in Western Michigan on Saturday.

The Golden Knights dropped to 3-7 on the season, while Northwestern stayed unbeaten at 10-0 and Calvin moved to 7-2. Clarkson begins its conference play next weekend when the team travels to play Bard College and Vassar College.

In the first set against Northwestern, Clarkson picked up an early lead by winning five of the first eight points, but the Eagles swung the momentum their way with a 14-6 run to make it 17-11. The Knights trimmed the margin to four on four occasions, but ended up seven points behind, 25-18. The Eagles offense was impressive, as the team struck for 19 kills and hit .412 in the set.

Clarkson found some answers to Northwestern's offense in set number two. At first, the Eagles had some unforced errors, but the Clarkson was able to frustrate the number-seven team in the country with some solid defense. The set saw 12 ties overall, and Northwestern led by two late (23-21). However, Julia Bennett made some huge contributions in the waning points, tying the set with a solo block, tying it again with a kill, and giving the Knights their first set point with another kills. Eventually, a tap kills from Kristin Werdine put Clarkson ahead 27-26, and an attack error by the Eagles gave the Knights a win in set two.

The Eagles' offense hummed along in set three, as the team hit .452 (16-2-31). The game was close near the midway point (13-10), but Northwestern cruised down the stretch, ending the game with some emphatic kills by Gabriella Straub.

The fourth set mirrored the second as the teams again played more evenly, including eight ties. Clarkson trailed for most of the early points, but caught up and gained a two-point lead (19-17) on a kill from Sara Galante. Northwestern won the next four points, but Clarkson rallied to tie at 21-21. Then, what appeared to be an Isabelle Crow error was rewarded to the Knights as a touch at the net was called, putting the Knights up 22-21. Clarkson would never trail again, holding off the Eagles thanks to kills from Crow, Werdine, and the set-ender by Galante.

The fifth set was tight until the break. The teams were tied 6-6 after a Sara Galante kill, but Ari Schmidt and Straub struck for back-to-back kills to make the score 8-6. After another kill from Galante trimmed the deficit to one, the Eagles' offense went on a run and scored the next seven points, allowing them plenty of room to collect the final point.

Kristin Werdine had a double-double with 19 kills and 15 digs, hitting 19-2-49 overall. Sara Galante hit .280 with 16 kills and only four errors in 40 swings as the Knights' outsides did most of the scoring. Isabelle Crow had 49 assists and 14 digs, while the back row of Emma Baxter (17 digs), Abigail Spector (12 digs) and Alexandra Bergantz (10 digs) was busy as well.

For Northwestern, four finished in double figures in kills, led by 17 from Ari Schmidt. Abby Glantzer added 16 kills and eight total blocks, and Gabriella Straub had 13 kills and 16 digs. The most efficient hitter was Kendra Hardy, who was 14-1-27 with six block assists. Grace Strickfaden and Hannah Gadient had 35 and 32 assists, respectively, and Marylyn Schroyer posted 34 digs.

In the second match of the day, Clarkson and Calvin battled in the first portion of the opening set with nine ties in the first 20 points, but Calvin went on a 9-1 run to put some distance between the two teams to win the opener. The second set, Calvin continued its momentum with a 6-0 start, a 13-3 lead near the midway point, and a 23-8 advantage late to win another game. The third set was closer, thanks to a late run from the Golden Knights. The two teams were tied at 7-7, but Calvin won nine of the next 12 points to gain a six-point advantage (16-10). The lead expanded to as many as eight (23-15), but Clarkson rallied back to within three after an ace from Emma Baxter forced Calvin to call a timeout at set point (24-21). The small break was enough for the team from Grand Rapids, and the match ended on the next point.

Kristin Werdine delivered nine kills on 27 swings versus Calvin, while Emma Baxter had seven digs and two service aces. For Calvin, Heidi Westra hit 13-3-27, Alyssa DeVries had 31 assists, and Aubrey Wrubel posted 14 digs.
