Galante and Regan Combine for 29 Kills in Clarkson's Win Over Potsdam

Potsdam, NY – A plucky SUNY Potsdam picked up a first-set victory and later pushed a game to extra points, but the Clarkson University Volleyball team overcame a slow start to gain a 3-1 victory over its crosstown rivals, 17-25, 25-10, 29-27, 25-19 on Friday evening.

The Golden Knights moved to 10-7 on the season while the Bears fell to 4-13. Both teams will take on Union College on Saturday, with Clarkson hosting the Garnett Chargers at 2:00 pm and the Bears facing Union at 4:00 pm.

In the first set, the Knights struggled to a .050 hitting percentage (10-8-40) while Potsdam's offense hummed along at .360 (10-1-25). The two teams were tied at 7-7, but Potsdam gained the lead on three straight Clarkson errors and later extended the margin to six when the Knights committed three more errors. The Knights got back within two (16-14) on back-to-back aces by Marin Hangliter, but Potsdam had enough offense to win the opener.

Clarkson had just a 5-4 lead in the second set, but rattled off 10 straight points to put the game away early. Natalie Peacock had four straight kills in that stretch, and capped it off as part of a block to make it 15-4. Overall, the Knights hit .414 in the set (15-3-29).

Set three appeared to be going Clarkson's way as well, as a Peacock kill allowed the Knights to hold a 10-4 lead. Clarkson led 13-9, only to see Potsdam score five straight to take the lead. The Bears would eventually lead by as many as two on three separate occasions, allowing the hosts to have the first set point (24-23). Potsdam would also have two more set points in extras, but Clarkson countered with back-to-back kills from Sara Galante and block assists from Allyson Treichel and Tess Sorel to outlast the Bears in the third.

The fourth set did not have the same kind of large leads or runs as the first three sets. Potsdam had a brief lead just three points in, but Clarkson otherwise owned a modest advantage through most of the game. The two teams were separated by just two points as the set was getting late (18-16), but Annabella Regan helped put the game away with three straight kills, with the Knights winning 25-19.

Sara Galante hit .308 with 15 kills and Annabella Regan posted 14 kills with a .435 hitting percentage to lead the Knights' offense. Natalie Peacock also chipped in nine kills for Clarkson. Isabelle Crow had 47 assists, Abigail Spector picked up 19 digs, and both Galante and Cecilia Velardi had 12 digs.

For Potsdam, Alyssa Adams notched 15 kills and Megan Henry scored 12 kills. Sophia Layer recorded 26 assists for the Bears, and Madison Gilliland picked up 17 digs, while Henry also produced 16 digs.
