Knights Pick Up Sixth League Win with Four-Set Victory Over SLU

Potsdam, NY – After a hot start by the visitors, the Clarkson University Volleyball team adjusted its defense and posted a tough block at the net, as the Golden Knights recovered from a first set defeat to win in four over St. Lawrence, 22-25, 25-15, 25-22, 25-14, on Friday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights improved to 6-1 in Liberty League contests and 12-7 overall, clinching a top-four spot in the conference playoffs with one game remaining on the league slate. St. Lawrence fell to 4-15 and 1-5 in conference matches. Clarkson takes on SUNYAC foe Brockport at 11:00 am on Saturday.

The Saints offense came out strong in the opener, posting 17 kills and hitting .400 as a team in the first set. Vivian Zymeck had five kills to lead the way, but the St. Lawrence offense was picking up kills in all spots on the court in the opening game. Despite a slow start, Clarkson stuck close to the Saints, tying the set on eight occasions, including as late as 20-20. Zymeck's fifth kill of the set ended it, 25-22.

Clarkson changed things up in the second, deciding to go big on the front row instead of using multiple defensive specialists in the back. The strategy worked, as Clarkson forced St. Lawrence in 11 attack errors, including four blocks. The Knights rolled out to a 12-3 lead, capped by a solo block from Julia Bennet, and Clarkson eventually pushed the advantage to 12 (16-4). The Saints would trim the margin to as few as six, but block assists from Bennett and Olivia Freer ended that run, and the Knights cruised to a double-digit win.

St. Lawrence rediscovered its offensive flow in the third set, hitting .231, but Clarkson countered with a .314 rate. The two teams jostled back and forth in the early going, but four straight points by the Knights near the midway point of the set gave Clarkson a three-point edge (14-11). The gap would fall to two on a couple of occasions shortly thereafter, and the Saints eventually came all the way back to tie the set twice. However, a kill from Olivia Freer and an ace by Isabelle Crow put the Knights back on top and ahead 2-1 in sets.

The fourth set was similar to the second as Clarkson's net players scored five blocks in the game, not including those that resulted in denials at the net that resulted in second attempts by the Saints that would not make it over on additional attacks. The Knights led throughout, scoring the first six points, and the team never really relinquished control of the game. St. Lawrence did come back to within four (18-14), but Clarkson scored seven straight to close the set, capping the match off with an ace from Tess Sorel.

Clarkson's net players combined for 10 points off blocks, including two solo blocks and 16 block assists. Sorel had five (1-4-5), Bennett produced four (1-3-4), and Freer had four block assists. Sara Galante led the offense with 17 kills, while Marin Hangliter (13 digs), Abigail Spector (12 digs), and Anna Mayer (12 digs) recorded double-digit numbers on defense.

For St. Lawrence, Vivian Zymeck notched 11 kills and 13 digs, Araiza Acum-Santos had 11 kills, and Kori Meissner produced 17 digs. Vanessa Latam had 31 assists for the Saints.
