Auburndale, FL – For the first time in 2023, the Clarkson University Softball team was able to take both games of a doubleheader, beating SUNY New Paltz 7-1 and downing Knox College 13-5 on Tuesday.

The Golden Knights evened their record at 5-5 on the season, while New Paltz dropped to 5-5 after the game against Clarkson, and Knox fell to 0-5 after its tilt against the Knights. Clarkson will have Wednesday off and then closes out its Florida trip against Endicott and Wesleyan on Thursday.

Clarkson never trailed against the Hawks, scoring an unearned run in the top of the first, as Emma Sabourin delivered a single up the middle to score Molly Pezzano, who had reached on an error earlier in the inning. The Knights tacked on another run in the second, as Riley Page opened the inning with a walk and then advanced to third on a stolen base and wild pitch. An infield groundout from Katy Aldous was enough to get Page home, putting the score at 2-0.

Neither team was able to score again until the seventh, when the Green and Gold stretched the margin thanks to a five-spot. Clarkson loaded the bases with singles from Aldous, Bridget Twaits, and Pezaano. Another single from Bridget Kerwin sent a run home, and then a sacrifice fly from Emma Sabourin made the score 4-0. Back-to-back infield errors allowed two more runs to score, and a passed ball sent in the fifth run of the inning. New Paltz got one back in the bottom half of the inning, but Riley Page was able to escape the seventh without any further damage.

Bridget Kerwin and Katy Aldous each had two hits as eight of the nine hitters in the Clarkson lineup had at least one hit. Riley Page pitched to contact over seven innings, but was never put in much danger, as she allowed only four hits and two walks in the complete game effort.

In game two, Knox started off the contest with four runs in the top of the first inning, but the Golden Knights rallied for two runs in the bottom half of the frame. As important as those two runs were, Clarkson broke out in the bottom of the second by scoring 11 runs, sending 16 hitters to the plate in that inning. Every hitter in the order scored at least once in the second inning, and though the Prairie Fire did pick up a run in the top of the third, Clarkson was able to run-rule the visitors after four and a half innings.
