Knights Drop Pair in Illinois

Rock Island, IL – From the start of Friday's matches, the Clarkson University Volleyball team struggled to find a rhythm, as the Golden Knights dropped a pair of matches in the Midwest, falling to Adrian College in three sets (25-21, 25-13, 25-22) and to Wisconsin-Platteville in three (25-15, 25-18, 25-18).

The Golden Knights will try to get back on track on Saturday when the team takes on Rose-Hulman in the morning, and then host school Augustana in the afternoon.

In the first set against Adrian College, the Knights jumped out to a 5-3 lead, but saw that advantage evaporate as the Bulldogs rattled off five straight. The two teams were tied at 10 and 11, but Adrian scored six straight, an advantage that would eventually swell to as many as seven late in the game (20-13). Clarkson began to come back thanks to a kill from Allyson Treichel, two straight kills from Sara Galante, and an ace from Cecelia Velardi. The gap would be reduced to two, but Adrian held off Clarkson's late charge thanks to a kill and an error at the end.

The second set was much like the first, with the two teams tied early (5-5), only to see Adrian score 10 of 13 points, taking advantage of some Clarkson miscues at the net and on serve receive. This time, Clarkson did not have an answer to get back into the set, as the Bulldogs cruised to the win, capitalizing on Clarkson errors.

At the start of the third set, it appeared as if Adrian would use the momentum from the second set to gain an easy sweep. The Bulldogs won 11 of the first 15 points, despite a timeout taken by the Knights at 9-4. Clarkson chipped away thanks to kills from Natalie Peacock and Emma Main, as well as three straight attack errors by the Bulldogs. After that run was halted, the Knights started another with kills from Treichel and Anna Mayer, and two straight blocks, forcing Adrian to call a timeout. The Bulldogs recovered to briefly regain the lead, but the two teams traded points for a stretch, tying five times. Adrian picked up the lead at 21-20 and never trailed or saw the set tied again, holding on for the win thanks to service error and a service ace to end the match.

Sara Galante finished with eight kills while both Emma Main and Allyson Treichel chipped in five kills. Anna Mayer added 11 assists and 10 digs and Abigail Spector produced 19 digs.

In the second match of the day, Clarkson came out a bit flat, hitting negative in the first set before finding a bit of a groove in the second and third games. During the second set, the game was tied at 12-12 before the Pioneers went on a pair of 3-0 runs to push their advantage to five. Platteville then picked up the necessary points down the stretch for a seven-point win. The momentum was on the Pioneers' side at the start of the third, as Platteville won nine of the first 10 points. Clarkson pulled back within three twice (13-10, 16-13) and looked ready to make a run, but the Pioneers capitalized on their opportunities on offense to keep the Knights at a safe distance to win by seven for the second straight set.

Galante again led the team with 10 kills, while Treichel hit .417 on six kills. Mayer again contributed 11 assists, and both Galante and Spector recorded nine digs.
