Clarkson Volleyball Picks Up Two More Wins in PA

Center Valley, PA – After dropping the first set twice on Saturday, the Clarkson University Volleyball team recovered each time, defeating Dickinson College in five sets (20-25, 21-25, 25-19, 25-23, 15-13) and then following up with a win over Rutgers-Camden in four sets (23-25, 25-17, 25-19, 25-16) to improve to 3-0 on the young season.

The Golden Knights will open up the home portion of the season next weekend when the team hosts Hamilton College on Friday night and then Oswego State on Saturday afternoon.

Clarkson had trouble offensively in the first two sets against Dickinson, hitting negative in the first game and committing nine errors in the second. However, the Clarkson offense righted itself in the next three, doubling up the mistakes (19 errors) with 37 kills. The third set was close until the end, but strong serving from both Isabelle Crow and Sara Galante closed out the Devils for a six-point win. However, the fourth and fifth sets were decided by just two points. Clarkson was up for most of the fourth set with a comfortable lead, only to see Dickinson briefly tie the game at 21-21. A kill and an ace from Sara Galante got the Knights back on track for the win as Marin Hangliter's kill closed out the fourth. Dickinson led in the early going in the fifth and was only one point away from having a four-point lead at the switch, but Clarkson rallied back with four unanswered points to take the lead 8-7. The game was back to even twice late, including at 13-13, but Julia Bennett picked up a kill for the lead and a bad set ended the match.

Though both Allyson Treichel (14 kills) and Sara Galante (13 kills) had more points, Julia Bennett was unstoppable for Clarkson against Dickinson. Bennett produced 11 kills on 17 swings with no errors and also chipped in four total blocks. Isabelle Crow recorded 45 assists, 13 digs, and four aces, and Abigail Spector had 22 digs from her libero spot.

In the second match of the day, Rutgers-Camden built an early lead in the opening set, only to see Clarkson climb back within striking distance late as a kill from Annabella Regan pulled the Knights within one on set-point, but a kill from Camden's Isabella Choice ended the hope of a comeback. Set number two eventually saw the momentum swing Clarkson's way, though the teams were tied 13 times in the first 28 points of the game. Kills from Allyson Treichel at the start and end of a 5-0 run turned out to be enough for the Knights to claim the second set. The third again saw Camden enjoy an early four-point edge (10-6), but Clarkson rattled off 10 straight points, including five aces from Sara Galante and three kills from Julia Bennett, with the Knights finishing the game with a six-point victory.

Clarkson's closeout set against Rutgers-Camden was similar to the third set, as Camden had a three-point lead near the midway point (10-7) only to see the Knights score eight straight to take a significant advantage. Only some hiccups down the stretch kept the Knights from winning by double figures, as Clarkson cruised near the end with three kills from Galante.

The second match of the day saw Galante record a career-best 20 kills to go along with six aces and 10 digs. Allyson Treichel was next on offense for the Knights with nine kills and five aces while Julia Bennett was strong for the second straight match with eight kills and a .353 hitting percentage. Isabelle Crow had 33 assists and 17 digs, while Abigail Spector tied for the team lead with 17 digs and also produced nine assists.
