Canton, NY – Some strong starts put the Clarkson University Volleyball team in excellent position in each set against St. Lawrence on Friday evening, as the Golden Knights came away with a 25-10, 25-11, 25-17 sweep of the Saints in Liberty League play at Burkman Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights improved to 8-12 overall and 2-3 in the Liberty League while St. Lawrence fell to 3-14 and 1-4. Clarkson looks to even its mark in conference play tomorrow when the team takes on RIT and later celebrates its seniors in a match against University of Rochester.

Olivia Baxter put up numbers from the service line that would make for a good weekend, recording seven aces among the first 11 points as the Golden Knights rushed out to a huge lead. The Knights expanded that margin to 14 before the Saints finally got on the scoreboard. However, that big margin to start was more than enough to hold up, as Clarkson cruised to a 15-point win despite only having eight kills in the first game.

Though the route to a lopsided win wasn't the same in set number two, the margin was nearly identical to the first. St. Lawrence was within two twice in the early going, including a 9-7 deficit, but a kill and two errors forced the Saints to take a timeout down 12-7. Clarkson scored five of the next six to double up the home team and found another gear late, getting kills from Grace Hanson and Emily Alexander to make it 21-10. An ace from Emma Cortez ended the set at 25-11.

St. Lawrence had its first lead of the match in the first handful of points, leading 6-4, but Clarkson quickly recovered to regain the lead. Up by just one (8-7), the Knights went on a 9-0 run, including numerous kills Marin Hangliter and capped by an ace from Emma Cortez. St. Lawrence notched three straight to get back within seven (18-11) and eventually trimmed it to six very late in the set (23-17), but a service error and an unassisted kill by Allyson Treichel in the middle closed out the match for the Knights.

Olivia Baxter finished with eight aces and Emma Cortez chipped in four aces as Clarkson kept the Saints off balance throughout the match. Emily Alexander was the team leader in kills with nine and Allyson Treichel and Grace Hanson each had five kills. Tess Sorel was strong up front with seven total blocks (one solo, six assists). Ashley Currier had 17 assists and Abigail Spector notched 11 digs.

From the St. Lawrence side of the net, Araiza Acum-Santos produced six kills and Kori Meissner posted 10 digs. Vanessa Latam notched 11 assists and Lily Snide recorded four aces.
