Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Knights Come Up Short in 2-1 Defeat to Vassar in Liberty League Playoffs

Poughkeepsie, NY – An early goal put the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team up in the opening minutes, but host Vassar College came back to tie the game midway through the first half and then scored what proved to be the game-winner in the first few minutes of the second half to send the Golden Knights to a 2-1 defeat in the Liberty League First Round on Tuesday afternoon.

The Golden Knights saw their record fall to 5-7-5 on the season while Vassar edged up to 11-2-5 for the year. The Brewers advance to the Liberty League Semifinals where they will face William Smith College.

The game started off with Molly DiCaprio making some strong saves in the opening minutes, her first coming off a block from just outside the six where she closed ground against Noelle Namba and deflected an attempt away before scooping up another from further out by Alice Crowley. Those two early saves allowed Clarkson to start in the other direction, which eventually resulted in a goal. A long pass down the right side saw Brooke Everest win a foot race and kick the ball off a Vassar defender, resulting in a corner kick. That play had impressive value since Julia Tylar's long pass in off the corner went to the opposite post where Callie Abel was able to head the ball through traffic and into the net at 4:11 to make it 1-0.

DiCaprio continued to make some solid saves in the middle of the half, but Vassar eventually did even things up. A counter from the midfield had Vassar setting up its offense on the left side and a pass back to the middle found Lucy Hart at about 25 yards out. With space, Hart settled the ball and took a hard shot with her right foot, skipping it just past DiCaprio inside the right post at 26:17, knotting the game up 1-1. The Brewers nearly scored another roughly a minute later off a corner, but Abel headed the ball out near the goal line to successfully clear the danger.

Vassar kept the pressure on at the start of the second half, scoring in the first few minutes to take a 2-1 lead. Clarkson attempted to clear the ball out of their defensive end, but Vassar kept possession near midfield. One quick pass found Rebecca Rodriguez on the right side, where she settled the hard exchange and turned to put a great ground ball back in the center midfield. Molly DiCaprio raced out of her net to try and collect the pass at the top of the box, but Gianna Panarelli beat her to it, one-touched to her right and tapped the ball into the empty net at 47:18.

After Vassar's goal, neither team produced much in the way of chances. Clarkson had an opportunity on another corner kick right before the 80-minute mark, but the deflection went just wide of the post. A few moments later, DiCaprio made another solid save on a shot in close, with the rebound going all the way out of the penalty area to a Clarkson player. The Knights had one more shot on the frame down the stretch, but Emma Robinson's attempt was from nearly 30 yards away and was easily picked up by Vassar keeper Laura Shea.

Vassar finished with a 16-7 lead in total shots and a 9-3 edge in shots on goal, while Clarkson was up 5-4 in corner kick opportunities. DiCaprio ended with seven saves for the Knights, while Shea had two stops for Vassar.
