Barnum Eclipses 150 Career Points in Knights 18-8 Win Over Plattsburgh

Plattsburgh, NY – Senior Madelynn Barnum scored five goals and two assists, passing the 150-point threshold and 130-goal mark for her collegiate career in the process, to help lead the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team to an 18-8 victory over Plattsburgh State in non-league action on Thursday afternoon.

The Golden Knights improved to 2-0 on the season, while Plattsburgh fell to 1-2. Clarkson will take on its third straight SUNYAC opponent on Saturday when the team hosts Oneonta State at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights had a busy first quarter, especially in the latter half of the period, as the Knights posted eight goals in the opening 15 minutes, including six in the final eight minutes. McKenna Cassin, Grace Graney, and Madelynn Barnum each found the back of the net twice in the first quarter, as the Knights steadily built an 8-2 lead.

It looked like the Knights might run away with the game when they scored four more times in the first six-plus minutes of the second quarter, edging out to a 12-3 advantage, but Plattsburgh's defense buckled down and kept the game at a nine-goal margin all the way into the break with neither team scoring for the final 8:30 of the half.

In the third, four different goal scorers pushed Clarkson's advantage to double figures (16-4), but a late rally from Plattsburgh got the clock stopping again when the Cardinals reduced their deficit to 16-7 by the end of the period. Clarkson's lead was more than enough to hold off Plattsburgh's sudden burst of offense, however, and the Knights finished with a 10-goal victory.

Barnum notched seven points with five goals and two assists, pushing her to 13 total points for the season and 156 for her career, creating what should be a game-by-game watch for the next few weeks as she climbs Clarkson's all-time leaderboard in scoring. Julia Lavarnway tallied five points on three goals and two assists and is also approaching 150 career points. At the other end of the spectrum, first-year collegians Makenna Cassin (4-0-4) and Gabby Cranfield (2-1-3) also contributed in the win, while Grace Graney scored a pair of goals as well. Defensively, Meredith James had six groundballs and caused a turnover and Rylee Ganter caused two turnovers with three groundballs. Each of Clarkson's three goalkeepers played, combining for three saves.
