Clarkson Back On Winning Track With Four-Set Victory Over Plattsburgh State

Potsdam, NY – As hitting percentages went, so did the results, as the Clarkson University Volleyball team picked up a four-set victory over Plattsburgh State on Friday evening at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights moved to 3-7 on the year and travel Saturday to face University of Scranton and SUNY Geneseo in their final matches before beginning Liberty League play. Plattsburgh State fell to 1-9 on the year.

Clarkson had robust hitting percentages in in the first two sets and had scores to prove it, winning 25-9 and 25-18 in the first two games before dropping the third. Clarkson came back in the fourth and kept the Cardinals offense in check, holding Plattsburgh to a -.065 percentage in the final game.

The Knights won the first six points of the opening set and were never really challenged in that first game. Plattsburgh narrowed the margin to five on a couple of occasions, but Clarkson led by double figures shortly thereafter. The Golden Knights had a diverse offense with Allyson Treichel, Marin Hangliter, and Emily Alexander each picking up three or more kills in the opener, with the team hitting .355 overall.

The second set was similar, with the Knights hitting a ridiculous .483, but this time Plattsburgh posted some solid offensive number of its own. Clarkson had a solid lead early once again, but this time the Cardinals recovered and tied the set on a few occasions, even taking the lead briefly at 10-9. Out of a timeout, the Knights scored a kill by Alexander, an ace by Cecilia Velardi, and a kill from Anna Mayer to regain the lead. Clarkson would never trail again and won the set going away with a gap of seven points.

Clarkson's offense still had 13 kills in the third set, but the success rate dipped to just .205, and the Cardinals took advantage. The game was close throughout and things were tied up 16-16 before Plattsburgh scored three straight with an ace and two kills. Although Clarkson recovered with two points after that, the Cardinals would never relinquish the lead, trading points with the Knights until the end when they went on a 3-0 run, capped off by a kill from Darby Collyear.

There would be no completed comeback, however, for Plattsburgh. Clarkson jumped to an early lead and went on a tear, scoring 10 of the next 13 points to expand the lead to 12. By that point the margin was too much to overcome, with kills and aces dotting the scoresheet to end the match.

Tess Sorel (10-1-19) and Emily Alexander (11-2-22) each posted excellent hitting percentages in the match, while Marin Hangliter led the team with 12 kills. Both Sorel and Allyson Treichel had three blocks as well. Anna Mayer recorded 41 assists and notched six kills, while Abigail Spector (22 digs) and Cecilia Velardi (14 digs) led the way in the back row. Spector picked up the 1000th dig of her career in the match.

For Plattsburgh, Liya Girma was a dig short of a double-double on 12 kills and nine digs, and Darby Collyear picked up nine kills. Bridget Ryan had 18 digs and Anabella Almeida posted 15 assists.
