Cortland, N.Y.- A quick response in the second half was on hand, as the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team battled to a 1-1 tie, Saturday afternoon, at SUNY Cortland.
With the stalemate, the Knights record the first tie of the season for the squad, moving to 3-3-1. Clarkson returns to action, opening Liberty League play September 25th, traveling to Skidmore.
Both teams managed to create a handful of chances through the first 45 minutes of the game, the best opportunity coming the way of the Golden Knights off a corner kick in the 35th minute. A service into the box from the right corner traveled all the way to the back post finding the head of Emily Davis. The redirected shot cannoned off the left woodwork and over the endline, out of danger.
Just over two minutes later, some quick combination play through the middle opened up for Brooke Everest on the left wing to attack the Cortland backline. The ensuing rightfooted from the forward traveled dangerously towards the top right corner but a quick reaction from the Red Dragons keeper, Kristen Spendel, kept the game leveled.
Play opened up quickly in the second half as the Knights continued to frustrate the hosts. Cortland would eventually find the game's first breakthrough in the 64th minute, as a corner into the box from Katie Cosenza was met by Katie Diem. The header from the Cortland defender bounced through a crowd in front of the net eventually ending up in the back of the Clarkson net.
The hosts' lead did not last long, as less than a minute later, almost directly off the kick-off, Clarkson earned a freekick just outside the 18 yard box on the left side. Chloe Hodge placed a shot on net after the ref's whistle as the save from the Cortland keeper dropped right in front of an open net before being tapped in by Callie Abel to level the score.
Both teams created some shooting opportunities throughout the remainder of the second half with the best chances coming in the final ten minutes of the game. In the 82nd minute, Everest received another pass on the left wing cutting inside towards the net, unleashing a shot that was corralled by the Cortland keeper. The Red Dragons managed one more shot on goal of their own as a ball into the box was held up nicely by a forward, setting up Liz Allen but the shot was saved by Isabelle Wood, making a nice stop down to her left.
Wood made three saves in net for the Golden Knights in her first career start while Spendel was credited with four for the Red Dragons. Both teams managed to create 12 shots as Clarkson led the way in shots on goal (5-4), while Cortland registered more corners (5-4).
