Timely Streaks Lift Ithaca Past Clarkson in Three Sets

Potsdam, NY – Hitting percentages progressed upwards for the visitors in each set as the Liberty League scheduled started off with Ithaca College down the Clarkson University Volleyball team in three sets, 25-16, 25-16, 25-22 in front of a large crowd at Alumni Gymnasium.

Off to a strong start from the service line, Ithaca kept the Golden Knights off balance in the first few points, but Clarkson recovered and took the lead on a couple of occasions in the early going, with the last score in the Knights' favor coming at 10-9. Clarkson was still close, trailing 12-11 after block assists from Emily Alexander and Tess Sorel, but Ithaca responded with three straight, forcing the Knights to take a timeout.

Tagging the ball with authority out of the break was Emily Alexander, as Clarkson again pulled to within one (15-14). That was the last gasp, however, for Clarkson, as Ithaca scored 10 of the final 12 points to win by nine in the opening set.

Much like the first set, Ithaca came out with a handful of points for the early lead. This time, though, the Knights could not complete the comeback to take the lead. Clarkson would rally to within one (5-4) in the first few moments, only to see Ithaca slowly expand the margin. With the score at 13-9, Ithaca took advantage of some Clarkson miscues as three straight attack errors allowed the gap to more to seven. An ace from Olivia Baxter pulled the Knights to within two, but Clarkson would never challenge the Bombers again, settling for another 25-16 defeat.

Exactly like the first two sets, Ithaca produced the first handful of points in the third. This time the Knights had a bit more in the tank on offense. Clarkson rallied to tie the set at 9-9 with kills from Tess Sorel and Emily Alexander and back-to-back aces from Emma Cortez. Although Ithaca would not relinquish the lead, Clarkson stayed within striking distance except for a 5-0 run midway through the set (17-12). That streak stopped for the Bombers and went Clarkson's way with four straight, capped off by block assists from Allyson Treichel and Ashley Currier. Down by one on three more occasions, Clarkson just could not find that extra gear to tie the match late, and Ithaca closed things out with a kill from Naomi Clauhs.

Standing out for Clarkson was Allyson Treichel, who notched 11 kills in the match to lead the Knights, while Grace Hanson chipped in seven kills. Ashley Currier had 15 assists and four kills and Olivia Baxter recorded three aces. Abigail Spector led all players with 18 digs.

Setting for Ithaca, Wesley Slavin ran the offense to the tune of 32 assists and a .282 hitting percentage while Ithaca also got standout performances from the service line, as Julia Costa posted six aces and Ellie Benedict added in four more. Naomi Clauhs hit .370 with 12 kills and Gabriela Gonzalez-Abreu had 10 kills and 13 digs. Benedict (17 digs) and Costa (13 digs) also performed well in the back row on defense.
