Knights Break Out of Scoring Slump with Lopsided 6-1 Win Over SLU

Potsdam, NY – It was only a matter of time before the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team's offense broke out of its recent slump, and it just happened to occur against its North Country rival St. Lawrence University and in front of a raucous crowd of over 3000 local school children on Wednesday, as the Golden Knights posted a 6-1 victory in non-league action at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights improved to 7-5-1 on the season and St. Lawrence dropped down to 6-8-1 on the year. Clarkson is off this coming weekend, but will return to ECAC play on November 21-22 against Brown and Yale.

Clarkson entered the contest having gone without a goal for nearly 223 minutes following three straight shutouts. That number increased by only an extra four minutes before the Knights was able to end the scoreless streak on a goal by Manon le Scodan. The puck stayed inside the zone and the passes went from point to point, eventually going down to the bottom of the right circle to Janelle Evans. She then swiftly sent a pass in front of the crease to le Scodan, who tipped the puck in at 4:24, making it 1-0.

With the goalless streak finally ending, Clarkson went off, adding another goal late in the first and then two more late in the second, and two more early on in the third. Jenna Smellie scored the Knights' second goal late in the first period, using a solid fake behind the net to get the St. Lawrence goaltender out of position to score a goal on a wrap around from beneath the goal line at 17:40.

The second period saw St. Lawrence with several solid chances in the middle of the frame. Clarkson goaltender Holly Gruber made two saves in the slot about eight minutes in and then 90 seconds later she denied two more, one from the high slot and then another on a rebound at the left circle.

The two teams traded power play goals late in the second period. Clarkson increased its lead to 3-0 on another tip-in from le Scodan at 14:30. The puck stayed in the zone off a long rebound that went out to the point where Keira Hurry sent a pass to Kate Manness at the right point and then down to Sara Manness for a shot at the top of the circle. From there, it was an easy tip-in on the power play for le Scodan. St. Lawrence responded with a goal just a few minutes later when a shot from Kennedy Wilson bounced right to the stick of Brooke Mulvihill, who finished off the play at the bottom of the left circle at 17:06.

Clarkson then scored three goals in a stretch of six minutes overlapping the end of the second and the start of the third. The team responded with a goal barely 90 seconds after St. Lawrence's power play marker when Megan McKay kept the puck in the zone and went to Kate Manness at the top of the right circle for another shot. Her shot was just touched outside of the crease by Sena Catterall and past St. Lawrence's second goalie of the game at 18:38.

Only 21 seconds into the third, Clarkson picked up its fifth goal. Immediately after an icing call, the Knights won the next faceoff where the puck fell back to Keira Hurry. Her initial shot was blocked by a SLU defender near the circle, but the rebound went right back to her stick for another shot which made its way through.

Clarkson finished off its scoring with a second goal from Sena Catterall, again on the power play. Sara Manness sent a pass through traffic to Janelle Evans, who threaded the needle across the crease for Catterall at 4:41.

After three scoreless games, Clarkson finished Wednesday's contest with five players having produced multi-point games. Both Kate Manness and Sara Manness had three assists in the contest while Janelle Evans recorded a pair of assists in the game along with multi-goal games from le Scodan and Catterall.

St. Lawrence won the battle for total shots (59-50) and shots on goal (39-29), but scored its lone goal on the power play, while the Knights picked up two extra-skater markers. Gruber finished with 38 saves in the contest for Clarkson. Kassidy Lawrence started the game and stopped 10 shots in just under 30 minutes of play, while Emma-Sofie Nordstrom closed out the contest with 13 saves.
