Big Third Quarter Helps Knights Claim 16-6 Win Over Canton

Potsdam, NY – An overwhelming run of goals in the third quarter turned a close game into a comfortable lead for the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team as the Golden Knights opened the 2025 campaign with a 16-6 win over SUNY Canton on Wednesday evening at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights, now 1-0 on the year, are scheduled to play Nazareth University on Saturday, though weather may alter those plans.

Although Clarkson was dominating the stat sheet in the first half, the score did not indicate as much. Canton was even with the Knights through the first quarter and trailed by just three at the half. Clarkson was controlling possession with a 21-4 advantage in total shots, a 12-4 lead in groundballs, and forced 10 of Canton's 15 first-half turnovers while committing just six of its own.

By the third quarter, however, the Knights immediately began to pull away. Sydney Nakas scored 37 seconds into the period and then again at 2:11 to make it 8-3 before assisting on a Makenna Cassin goal at 3:31 for a six-goal advantage. Lindsey Wunder broke the streak for Canton, only to see Madelynn Barnum score a pair of goals 48 seconds apart. From that point on, the Knights were close to holding a 10-goal lead to force a running clock, but that would not occur until early in the fourth quarter on a Merissa McCorry goal 3:33 into the frame. Lauren McCorry then tallied two minutes later to maintain the double-digit advantage and Clarkson cruised to the win.

Clarkson finished with a 35-13 lead in total shots (29-12 shots on goal) and also picked up 23 groundballs to Canton's 9. Olivia Scott made 13 saves for Canton, while Jennaca McGill made one stop in the first 30 minutes and Riley Donovan made five saves in the second half.

Sydney Nakas led all scorers with seven points, notching four goals and three assists while also grabbing four groundballs and causing three turnovers. Gabby Cranfield also assisted on three scores and tallied two goals herself. Madelynn Barnum recorded three goals in the contest and won seven draw controls. Rylee Ganter and Maeve Bartell each caused two turnovers and had three groundballs.

For Canton, Lindsey Wunder posted three points on a goal with two assists while also snagging two groundballs, causing two turnovers, and winning three draw controls. Sydney Dunn and Maddy Caron each scored twice, with Caron also recording eight draws.
